Anyone know how to do this optimisation problem??

I'm having a bit of trouble solving this problem:

Find the maximum area of a parallelogram drawn in the area enclosed by the curves y=4-x^2 & y=x^2+2x

Does anyone know how to go about solving this?

Hi Kyra;

This is as far as I have got: The area enclosed by the 2 curves is 9 so naturally we have a upper bound of 9 for the parallelogram.

This is very late but it took me a long time to do. The parallelogram with the maximum area inscribed between those 2 curves has an area of ( 27 / 4 ) = 6 .75.

This problem is equivalent to finding the triangle of maxumum area,such that one of its vertices is the center of rotational symmetry of the two parabolas.

Please do not take this the wrong way. But you have worked with me long enough now to know my idiosyncracies. You know that jargon is for theoreticians and they are like little butterflies to me, quite pretty but generally useless. I like and prefer solutions.
