Apparently large portions of books can be just copied and put into your own. None of them mentioned a prior work.

That is surely plagiarism?

A great American imbecile once said, "it is only cheating if you get caught!"

I guess like that imbecile they believe the same thing about stealing.

4 billion Americans worldwide? I don't follow...

Hanh sent me a message on Gmail and we had a chat earlier. Apparently since she has only been in London for 3 years and she comes from Vietnam, her permanent residence application was rejected, so she is an international student. As a result, her tuition fee costs rise from £9000 to £21000, making her unable to go to Cambridge (if she meets the offer), or any university in London. As a result, she will have to take a year out and earn as much money as possible to barely scrape by. Sad...

Hi;

That is sad. Why would they reject her? I know another Vietnamese kid who said he was rejected here because his parents were active members of the Communist party. Could that be the reason?

The reason is that Vietnam is not a commonwealth country.

Britain is pretty tough! Is she very good at math?

In my opinion, yes. She picks up thinks very quickly. It is a shame that she worked so hard, became fluent in Emglish after only a year in London, got a Cambridge offer, and is rewarded with an £84,000 debt which she will probably not pay off until she is 50.

That happens here too. In the past it was even worse here. I could not afford it.

No, just for soldiers. They had such a thing as Community college but it amounted to a lot of money. You also had to go at night after work. Cost about 70 dollars per credit and you needed a couple of hundred( do not remember the exact amount). This did not include books. My salary was 326 dollars per month so you can see...

Some people got loans from the government because of military service. Their education amounted to a huge debt. Adjusted for today it was probably around 200 thousand dollars.

That is terrible. It seems that the education history of the UK and US are very different. And it begs the question -- is it worth going to university?

Depends on what you want to do with your life.

Of course, there are a lot of jobs where a degree is a necessity. Unfortunately, it is a huge risk given the debt you pay back later in life. If things do not go to plan (perhaps you fail your degree) then that would be bad.

You have to make sure that you do not fail.

Highly unlikely, don't you think?

I don't think I will be the worst guy there but I don't know much about who my competition will be. I know UCL awards a first to roughly the top 40%, which is pretty large, and a 2.1 to a slightly smaller percentage. I don't want anything below a 2.1 because over here if you don't get that you're not allowed to be a teacher (much less a lecturer!). Generally a first is needed to continue study.

That is almost half of the people! Most of life is a gamble one way or another.
