Linear equation?

So an equation with two terms is a binomial right? An equation with degree ^1 is a linear equation. Ax + By = C is the general form of a linear equation with two variables that we graph. The book I'm reading says that -2y = 5 is a linear equation with two variables. Why is this? There is 0x there.

Hehe, explain why the book is wrong.

Re: Linear equation?

book says it's written in the form Ax + By = C.   A=0. B= -2, C = 5
So

0(x) + (-2)y = 5

What book is that?

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.

With that perspective, I can say y = 5 is an equation of infinite variables e.g. 0x, 0m, 0n, 0p etc.

Re: Linear equation?

Definiton: A variable is said to be there if its highest power in the equation is not zero.

Also, the degree of the zero polynomial is undefined.

You however *can* consider it an equation in 2 variables, because you can plot it on the cartesian plane

Re: Linear equation?

Using that idea we can say that x^2 + 5x -10 = 0 is a 200th degree polynomial equation because all the other powers have 0 coefficients.

Re: Linear equation?

You can call it anything you like. Does the name matter?

Re: Linear equation?

He says it's bivariate because he's thinking of it from a graphing perspective.
