Re: Limits

Why didn't you try anoter girl?

It does not help me solving a limit problem.

We are out here in the real world, we are not in some classroom. How do you think those two people came up with 1?

Re: Limits

We are in a Matrix.

I do not know. I cannot get Mathematica to simplify the expression.

Re: Limits

Good morning, bobbym smile

I have no reason to believe that it is 1

Re: Limits

Hmmm, you do not find it suspicious to your nature that two people on opposite sides of the world came up with that answer?

You prefer just handing in a big empty space rather than their answer?

Re: Limits

No body gave the answer 1, it is in a textbook.

No, I do not prefer it. How do i evaluate the limit?

In a non-computer worle, there are just a few numbers like e, pi, 0, 1, sqrt(2$), etc.

Re: Limits

As n->oo, nth root of the number tends to 1.

Isn't 1^oo an indeterminate form?

I do not know but why are you plugging in x = 0 when the limit is to infinity?

Re: Limits

Oh, I overlooked that.

Anyway, the thing inside is oscillating, how do you know what happens to it, when you reach infinity?

Re: Limits

I do not know, I am just asking why the book gets that answer too.

Trying it numerically I can not get any oscillation. Everything goes to 1.

Re: Limits

I do not know what she did or what the book did but here is what I have been trying...

N[(Cos[x] + a*Sin[b*x])^(1/x) /. x -> 10000001 /. a -> -79 /.
  b -> (3 + 1/2), 40]

Re: Limits

Oh boy! Change the values to anything you like. We are looking for some evidence of the conjecture that the limit is 1. We are looking for a counterexample.

Experimenting (playing) leads to new ideas. First we would like to test more numbers without having to put them in manually. How would you do that?

We notice on some examples that a complex number seems to be produced. But is this imaginary term a fungus as Forman calls it or does it really exist?

Re: Limits

It could exist, if the number inside is negative...

Re: Limits

Hmmm, you sound like an undergrad when you say things like that.

You have not tried a single example but you are sure of that? This is a good test problem for you. You do not know how to do the limit so naturally you are scouring the net for how to do it. You hope to find some means but what if you do not?

Re: Limits

Forget the plot, it tells nothing about how this thing behaves for large x.

This is a good test problem for you. You do not know how to do the limit so naturally you are scouring the net for how to do it. You hope to find some means but what if you do not?

Have you actually tried raising a negative number up to a large power? Try - (1 / 2).
