Try -1/2 where?

Re: Limits

You seem to think that the root of a negative number taken to larger and larger x is negative?! Is it?

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.

Ofcpurse not. It should go to one

Re: Limits

Yes.

I am sorry, my book does not say it is one. My book has a different question

Re: Limits

You mean to the limit?

So no matter what number is inside the parentheses it seems that if x is large enough it tends towards one. Yes?

Re: Limits

Okay, teachers are fond of posing questions like do this without a calculator. Do this without calculus. Do this without a CAS. Do this without this or that...

Here is my contrived question:

You are one of nine applicants applying for a job at MASA. All nine are sent into their own cubicle that has a desk, a pen, some paper, a terminal running m10.0 and a comfy chair. There is a question on the paper, it is this limit. There is a sign on the wall it says,

"You must answer the question, failure to answer the question means dismissal and your application is discarded. The exits are down the hall and to the right. Have a good day."

What will you put as the answer?

I am cooking dinner for three, see you later.

Re: Limits

What is MASA? What is m10.0?

Re: Limits

That is about as far as we can do with EM. gAr has done a bunch of limits of that type somewhere but I do not remember where.

Re: Limits

One of the first times I ever used a limit on a problem of my own I knew the answer to that question.
