Hi everyone!

You've probably heard of these before, and they are among the toughest I've tried. See how far you can go XD

Warning to children, although these riddles do not have any graphic images or text, they are 'creepy', and the music can be disturbing.

The two I've tried myself so far:

big_smile Kudos to anyone who can complete them!

Hi everyone,
I've been wrestling this problem for some time now, but every solution I try seems to not work (My worst subject is probably geometry -_-). (This problem is also in excercises)

Question:
Ribbon is run around a box so that it makes a complete loop with two parallel pieces of ribbon on the top (and on the bottom) of the box.

The ribbon crosses every face once, except the top and bottom, which it crosses twice. The ribbon rests tightly against the box all the way round because the angle at which it meets a corner is continued onto the next face.

I can cut the ribbon in advance of placing it around the box and I can slide the ribbon around a little to position it.

If the box is 20cm by 10cm by 5cm, how long will the ribbon be?

Ah, but isn't that dedicated to the world and it's happenings? I don't think the two fit in one forum.

Thanks, I'll try to digest that

Why not make a forum dedicated to non-mathematic ventures? It could be where poems, member writings, music and art could go. While I realise this is a maths website, I just think this'd be a good idea anyway.

I don't like the multiverse theory: it would be nice if our universe was unique. I think that a multiverse is a universe without a destiny, just a future with an infinite amount of outcomes. Bleh!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I know little about this subject and am mostly hypothesising:
The universe expands at the speed of light, right? Recent research has shown that over billions of years the speed of light has been gradually falling. Does this represent the declining rate of expansion of the universe? When the universe stops expanding, the speed of light has reached 0, and everything stops, temperature reaches absolute zero and time has no meaning. Unless, of course, gravity pulls everything back together, and the universe contracts at the speed of light, which gradually speeds up. This would mean that time would reverse, right? Wouldn't it be weird living in a world where time flows in reverse? Would we even notice it? You'd be born out of a coffin and die in a womb. Creepy.

wow these forums are rly active, I came back the next day and this topic receives so many posts.
btw I don't have a horn anymore, I was actually hiring it. They're so expensive here xD

Thanks for the help devante, but i don't think that the methods are the same for cubics or quartics hmm.

Please tell me how to factorise expressions such as

etc...

Also, do they use the same methods, or must I use different methods for each?

I really only know how to solve quadratics and that

has 'n' x intercepts. And that's about all I know xP

thx,

Excercises (Contains Trigonometry ~ Grade 9 standard)
*Diagrams located below*

1. The lines PQ and SR are parallel and are 6 cm apart. T is the midpoint of QR. Find the area, in square centimeters of the shaded region.

2. PQR is an isosceles triangle with a base of 18cm and sides of 15cm and is inscribed in the circle as shown. Find the radius length of the circle.

If the box is 60cm by 30cm by 15cm, how long will the ribbon be?

4. For the diagram given, show that

(Hint: look for similar triangles)

5. A square of side length 12cm is placed inside a circle so that each of the corners touches the circumference of the circle. Find the area of the shaded region to 2 decimal places.

6. In the rectangle shown, ST and UQ are perpendicular to PR. Given PQ = 18 and QR = 12, find:
(a) Length of UR
(b) Area of the Parallelogram TQUS.

7. The bearing of a buoy from the end of a jetty (Point A) is 320° and the bearing of the same buoy from the other end of the jetty (Point B) is 338°. The jetty is on a North-South line, that is A is due North of B. The distance between the points A and B is 150 metres. Calculate the distance of the buoy from point A correct to the nearest metre.

8. A ship leaves an island and sails on a bearing of 130° for 150km and then on a bearing of 250° for 320km. If the ship is to return to the island sailing on a direct course,
(a) How far does it have to travel?
(b) What bearing should it sail on?

9. A man is observing a yacht at sea from the top of a cliff. The angle of depression of the yacht from the top of the cliff is 44°. If the yacht, from its current position, sails a further 200 metres away from the cliff, the angle of depression is now 38°. How high is the cliff? Give your answer to the nearest metre.

Wow, thanks for the advice - i underestimated the use of that angle and cos, infact I neglected trigonometry, thinking that similar triangles would suffice.

Oh, and Devante, i've got quite a few more of these kinds of problems, if you want to put them on the website big_smile

alright kthxbye

#839 Re: Help Me ! » One more problem on Geometry... » 2006-10-08 22:40:08

Huh?

To quote wikipedia, "All parallelograms are quadrilaterals"

They both adhere to the rules,
1. Opposite sides parallel
2. Angles bisection cross each other

#840 Re: This is Cool » The Nine Planets 'Solar System Tour' » 2006-10-08 21:58:24

A planet should be something large enough to be round, small enough to not combust, and orbit around a star... hmmm. It sounds good enough to me, and therefore we have 30+ planets in our solar system.

#841 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Music; What's Your Instrument? » 2006-10-08 21:52:22

Piano - Have been playing for around 9 years now, and thus is my main and most loved instrument.
French Horn - Learnt for 2 years then gave it up. Don't get me wrong, it was fun, but I'm really busy nowadays.

Hi there everyone!

I have this really annoying geometry problem, and it involves similar triangles I think sad. I am still confused.

RQ = 12
PQ = 18
Find the length of UR.

THX

Oh, and can someone please tell me how to type using complex notation? e.g putting in fractions, functions, exponents XD
