Three balls are thrown into eight boxes that are lined up in a row. What is the probability of two balls landing in the same box and the next one landing in another box? Balls always land in a box.

bobbym will become the best combinatoricist of Florida soon.

Vegas has about a million people, Florida has about twenty million and I am there too so that is very unlikely.

Bobby's methods are fine. He is a good programmer and knows more math than he admits but lets face cold facts. Everybody knows EM as he calls it is a young persons game. The feminine mind is more intuitive and more capable at those ansatze he loves so much. smile

Hello:

While bobbym cooks a late night snack for himself, he said I could answer this as long as I showed the proper respect. smile

it is not empirical.

He got the result by examining some actual experiments. That is what he meant by empirical. As you can see it was correct. Do you think he wasn't capable of the n(n-1) analysis? We are talking about the best combinatoricist here in Vegas. Why does he prefer empiricism and an Ansatz? The reason is simple because it will make short work on the tougher problems, the ones where reasoning will fail. Just take a look on how he answers the gAr problems and mine in the other threads.

Maybe he assembled n married couples and asked them to pair up in new ways and recorded the results.

That is exactly what he did but in virtual reality.

You think that post was about experimental teaching?

The post isn't about teaching but rather about Brad's ability or inability to solve a problem. His ability or inability to come up with an Ansatz. That is why it's all about experimental math. You are graded on how you answer the question.

Yes, very bad teaching indeed.

I took the quiz here where that was one of the type questions I actually failed to answer. What answers did you guys give? smile

why are you saying that post 6 is experimental?

http://www.mathisfunforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=19346

Most of that he got from me!

#165 Re: Help Me ! » Help? » 2014-04-23 13:52:41

It is experimental. He first used Geogebra to hammer out the details. Please post the Geogebra demonstration.

What is bobbym talking about in post 12?

I know.

I could argue that he does, but that would be disrespectful of the administrator

He better not know because that means Bobbym told him. He has never told me...

I am close to a solution to that graph problem but I will not post it.

#171 Re: Guestbook » Linear Interpolation of FP1 Formula - Parallel Thread » 2014-04-03 21:31:29

I never learned how to cook. I was more interested in mathematics and computers. I would not make a good wife if that is what you mean.

#172 Re: Guestbook » Linear Interpolation of FP1 Formula - Parallel Thread » 2014-04-03 21:28:28

May I ask you a personal question?

Do not ask my age or Bobbym's. smile

Acting like Bobbym's opposite could be dangerous. Acting like him could be worse.

Bobbym;

Why are my posts to that person edited? Why is he not barred? How can I complain to MathsIsFun about him?

Diagonalizing, and its related problem of finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors, is a major subject of research for Numerical mathematics. For 5 dimensions or higher, it can only be done by iterative methods.

And what is wrong with iterative methods? Do you know that you can diagonalize  an 8 by 8 when it is possible even with floating point numbers?  [comment removed]

Hello gAr;

Very pretty and I got it to work and understood it before Bobbym did!
