what is the meaning of protractor ? why we call it protractor? what is tha reason behind its name?

Well I didn't know this so I looked it up on Dictionary.com

They say it's from the word 'protract', one meaning being "to plot and draw".

So now I suppose you'll be wanting to know where the word "protract" comes from ....... ad infinitum.
