Does 1 = .999...In regard to 9recurring made an account because I disagree with your math. #2 20131230 15:28:45

Re: Does 1 = .999...Hi hungryfornumbers;
You will not find any math forum on this side of heaven that will say anything else. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #4 20131230 22:32:08

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Last edited by Agnishom (20131230 22:42:40) 'And fun? I hope someone remembers that the next time we are discussing something strange. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Re: Does 1 = .999...Okay, I edited it. Did you know that an established member in here used to or does think that 0.999... does not exist? 'And fun? I am studying 'Elementary real and complex analysis' by Shilov. Last edited by bob bundy (20140108 00:03:59) You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself..........Galileo Galilei #12 20140108 00:36:09

Re: Does 1 = .999...Could you Please post the proof and the book(if possible)? 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' Re: Does 1 = .999...
The book is as stated above. You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself..........Galileo Galilei #15 20140108 01:59:32
Re: Does 1 = .999...
That violates Godel's Theorem 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' Re: Does 1 = .999...Good point. When I said 'everything', I meant everything that follows in his book, rather than everything that ever was/is/shall be. You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself..........Galileo Galilei #17 20140108 15:48:09

Re: Does 1 = .999...
He expressed it in mathematical logic symbols but you can roughly sum it up as in a mathematical theory there is a statement, A, that states that "A cannot be proved". You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself..........Galileo Galilei #19 20140108 23:30:24
Re: Does 1 = .999...Godel's theorem are the following:
Sorry, that was not what I am telling. I was reffering to the Second Theorem. He cannot even prove everything in his book from scratch because it is impossible. There has to be axioms somewhere. Re: Does 1 = .999...hi Agnishom,
I believe this is much the same as what you are saying. You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself..........Galileo Galilei #21 20140109 08:48:57
Re: Does 1 = .999...How are you liking Shilov's book? On my first read, it seemed like a not very good book. I have discovered a truly marvellous signature, which this margin is too narrow to contain. Fermat Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. Archimedes Young man, in mathematics you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Neumann #22 20140109 20:25:31
