Re: averages

okay! Hi Broc, sounds like a good name for a president.
Averages is like finding a middle.
Take a yardstick and place objects on the
numbers you want to average.
Try to move the objects to the middle of the
group by moving one on the left toward the
middle and compensate (but also do this) by
moving an object that is way far right toward
the center.  When all the objects are in the
same spot or really close to that, you have
your average now.

There is another way to do an average.
Take All the numbers from 16 to 20 and average them.
16,17,18,19,20.  There are five numbers.
#1=16
#2=17
#3=18
#4=19
#5=20
Now add them up.
16+17 = 33
18+19 = 37
20 is just 20
Now add them up somemore.
33 + 37 = 70, plus 20 more = 90.
Now take the add-m-up-score of 90 and
divide it by
the number of numbers.
#1 was 16, #2 was 17, #3 was 18, #4 was 19, and #5 was 20.
So there are five numbers.
Take the big score of 90 and divide ÷ the 90
by 5 to get the AVERAGE.
90 is 10 under 100, and 100 ÷ 5 is 20.
10 is 5 times 2.
So 20 - 2 = 18, so 18 times 5 is 90, which
is our average.
So 16_17_18_19_20 is the starting numbers,
and 18 is the average.
I'll help more later.
Ask more questions.
Any question is a good question.

Re: averages

3 main types of average:

Mean: add up all the values and divide by how many there are (this is the most commonly used average)

Median: arrange the values in order of size, and then find the one in the middle

Mode: the most common value.

Re: averages

So then how do you find an average price say when you have different numbers of things with different prices

44 Bananas @ $6.40      = $281.60

67 Onions @ $15.50       = $1038.50

26 Pears @ $19.80         = $514.80

How do you calculate the average price for these items?

Re: averages

3 categories (Banan, Onio, Pear): $611.633333 is average cost per category.
137 units (Banan unit, Onio unit, Pear unit):$13.3934 is average unit cost
$611 is obtained by adding 281 + 1038 + 514 and dividing by 3 categories.
$13 is obtained by adding 281+1038+514 and dividing by 137 units.
