A cubic equation f(x) = 0 has roots -3, -1 and 4. f(x) leaves a remainder of 12 when it is divided by x+2. Find the remainder when f(x) is divided by x^2 -2x-1.
Answer is -16x - 20.
Please assist. I think there's long division involved, but I'm just making assumptions.

The cubic equation can be written as:
Since if you sub in the roots of x you get zeros.
Now use the remainder theorem to find the value of a, and long divide for the final answer.
