on this website they call these Math Word Problems

This is a Math Word Problem from 3rd Grade section of www.EdHelper.com

Problem:
            CLEAN
          +  SNAP
            COVER

         
(Use the numbers: 5, 7, 4, 6, 0, 3, 8, 9, 1, and 2)

Answer:
             85426
            + 3621
             89047


I'm not sure the best way to do this, let alone teach it. hmm
Can anyone help me out?

Hi MamaBee;

Sometimes I use a computer to solve them but mostly a lot of trial and error. There are some hints from the problem:

1) S + L must be less than 10 because there is no carry in the next coulumn.

2) If P + N is less than 10 then E must be even.

3) C is not a 0 because they rarely if ever use a leading digit of 0

4) Neither P or N is a 0 because N + P = N or N + P = P
