Re: fraction?

Hi Sarah;

What do you want to do to the fraction?

Re: fraction?

Hi Sarah;

Well of course I have one. There was a freshly baked apple pie sitting on the table. I carved out 1/2 of the pie and ate it. Since I was still hungry and thoughtless too, I took another 1/3 of the original pie. How much pie is left for you?

Re: fraction?

Hi Sarah;

That's not right. If I hadn't eaten any of the pie then you would have 1 pie left to eat. But I did eat some.

Re: fraction?

Hi Sarah;

Please don't be sorry, just give me your idea as to what I have left you to eat. Give it a try, even a guess.

Re: fraction?

Hi Sarah;

My first piece was 1/2 of the pie and then my second piece was 1/3 of the original pie. How much have I left.

Re: fraction?

Hi Sarah;

You only have 1 pie to start so when that hog eats pieces of it you have less then 1. Do you follow that idea? As you can see from the diagram that your piece is considerably less than 1 pie.
True?

Re: fraction?

Wait, wait we are not done. Looking at the drawing would you say that your piece is less than half the pie?

Re: fraction?

Here is how you figure out exactly what is left.You started with one whole pie and I ate 1/2 so:

1 - 1/2 = 1/2. You have 1/2 a pie left then I came and ate another 1/3 so:

1/2 - 1/3 = 3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6 so there is 1/6 of the pie remaining.

Re: fraction?

You are so good at math

That is kind, but not true. I have to work very hard at it to get small results. Like chess it demands total concentration. If my mind waivers for a second, I make a mistake. But that is not important, did you understand my explanation?

Re: fraction?

Hi biggdadde05;

Here is how I do it. First convert 3 1/2 to an improper fraction.

3 1 / 2 = 7 / 2 Now dividing by 2 / 3 is like multiplying by 3 / 2, so:

7 / 2 * 3 / 2 = 21 / 4. I just multiplied the numerators 7 * 3 = 21 and then multiplied the denominators 2 * 2 = 4. So 21 / 4 is the answer.
