factoring/math

Can anyone give me the rules on how to factor problems.  Like 3x-4-8x  What is the first thing I look for or do to factor this problem.  I need step by step instructions.

Re: factoring/math

Hi bonnie06;

That one doesn't need to factored: Just simplified by combining like terms.

3x - 8x = -5x

So the answer is - 4 - 5x

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.
