Word Problem for binomials

A rectangular painting with a width of x centimeters has an area of x^2+50x square centimeters.

Find a binomial that represents the length.

I don't even know how to start on this one.  I know area=LW and the width would be X.  So would the length be 50x^2?

Re: Word Problem for binomials

Hi MathChallenged;

Since you know that A = L * W and you know that A = x^2+50x and W = x you can just plug in.

x^2 + 50x = x * L Divide both sides by x.

x + 50 = L = Length

So your length is x + 50 cms.
