Word questions for division, chunking and multiplication grids (KS2)

How do I work out the answers to the following questions?

A school bus drives 45.23 kilometres each day.  If there are 39 weeks in the school year, how far will the bus travel in total?

If the bus does 6.5 kilometres to a litre of diesel, how much will it cost to run the bus over 2 years?

I have tried several methods but the second question in particular stumps me.

Thanks, in anticipation of your help.

H.

Re: Word questions for division, chunking and multiplication grids (KS2)

hi Kaitlyn01,

45.23 Km per day => 45.23 x 5 Km per week  => 45.23 x 5 x 39 Km per school year.

x 2 for two years.

Every time the bus travels 6.5 Km it needs a litre of diesel so divide the total distance by this to get how many litres are needed.

What will this cost?

Well that depends on the price of diesel, which you haven't got in your post.

Did you forget to put it in or are you expected to find out?

I have just done a quick search on Google and got a 'best price' of 131p per litre.

So the whole calculation would be

45.23 x 5 x 39 x 2 /6.5 x 131 /100 to get the answer in pounds.

Hope that helps.

Bob
