You can cancel common things from the top and the bottom. The ( x - 4 ) is common in all the terms of the top and bottom.

-2 - 6 , change the sign of the 6 and proceed as in addition. -2 - (-6) = -8

Nope!

3x + 5x = 8x

-2 - (-6) = -8

So you have 8x - 8 on the top. Factor that please.

You shoud get 8 ( x - 1 )
