Firefox 1.5 Released

Firefox 1.5 has now been released ... I haven't tested it out yet, but I really like Firefox 1.0 (much better than Internet Explorer in my opinion, also a lot safer), so this is bound to be even better!

You can download or read more about it here http://www.getfirefox.com

Or just watch the ad at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid … 5918805740

Re: Firefox 1.5 Released

Way cool.

I use Firefox primarily for web development, because the extensions are amazing (venkman, aardvark, web developer toolbar and the like). I'm waiting to DL it until I see if all my favorite plugs are supported, which I'd rather get paid to do than not. So, I'm waiting to do it at work. wink

Re: Firefox 1.5 Released

I've just installed it. I've been playing 'spot the differences'. There aren't many major differences - well, at least that you can see. There are some tiny changes like the spacing, highlighting and layout of the menus. With tabbed browsing, you can now drag the tabs to reorder them... I've had a few seconds of fun trying that out. smile That's all I've found at the moment.

Re: Firefox 1.5 Released

Pretty much the same for me. That is a big plus really, that it behaves the same.

I think there has been a lot of work done "inside". I notice support for "SVG" - a vector graphics standard which may allow me to draw graphs inside a web page (but won't work on IE, which is still most used)

At least one of my favourite extensions is not yet ready for 1.5, but I don't think it will take long.

So I will stay using 1.5

Re: Firefox 1.5 Released

I checked it out yesterday. No Venkman. sad There are a few unofficial hacked versions out that claim to work, though.

Re: Firefox 1.5 Released

Firefox 1.5 has been working well for me so far.

But waiting for extensions to be updated could be a real issue. Apparently developrs also face a bit of a wait to get approval for the extensions - I noticed some developers pointing to "unofficial" versions on their websites.

Anyway ryos, what kind of web development do you do?

Re: Firefox 1.5 Released

Apparently, Firefox is actually safer than IE, due to the fact it's an open source code, so people can easily change any bugs they find (The theory is, also, that any bugs a hacker can find, an honest programmer can). It also has tabbed browsing which rules.

Re: Firefox 1.5 Released

It's also standards-compliant, which means nothing to most people but a great deal to web developers whose web sites work on everything BUT IE and we then must go through a horrible process of hacks to try and make it work because 80% of the web-using public uses it.

If the web devs didn't code around it, most sites would be horribly broken in IE. I sure wish we could do that--just agree to stop accomodating Internet Explorer so people would stop using it and the world would be a better place.

Unfortunately, people would blame us, not their browser, and stop visiting our sites.

Anyway, to Rod: I work at the English Language Center at Brigham Young University. Most of what I do is PHP w/MySQL, and Javascript here and there. http://www.elc.byu.edu/

I'm also working on the web site for the family business, but that's not up yet.
