It turns out A was not a true math problem. The bottom row is the number of letters in the top row. He's reworked the puzzle and replaced A with this.
A. What number should replace the question mark?
3 15 2 | 4 20 2 | 4 14 3 | 2 13 5
9 | 12 | 2 | ?

I can see where you get that except for the 3rd set. How does that fit; or are you assuming that one's wrong?
