Re: A troubling generating function

It is easy when you spot it.

I disagree. Maybe Euler could. Not the guy who posted that problem.

For the limit you should be able to answer that yourself.

Re: A troubling generating function

I don't know how to calculate that limit.

And don't you insult the guy who posted this problem!

Nope.I am not that guy.I do not mind being insulted. But do not insult that guy.

I may reveal who he is after we are finished here.

Re: A troubling generating function

Seems you are finished here. And saying someone is not equal to Euler is not an insult.  That person would agree. Also he may have seen the solution due to Euler or he might use the methods gAr and I use.

Re: A troubling generating function

No,it is an insult for that person to say that he wouldn't get the zeta form of the sum.

And,I still need help with the limit.

Re: A troubling generating function

I do not think so. That is not a Zeta, but a Hurwitz function. There are many ways to solve a problem. You are missing the entire point of problem after problem.

Re: A troubling generating function

It is the Hurwitz Zeta function.

Problem after problem?

Re: A troubling generating function

Yes, you will not get that limit, or that generating function or that sum using the methods you want to.

Now the question is doing what works. We are not talking about the Fields medal or a job at Princeton. We are talking about never leaving a question unanswered. This is what scores the points on tests and in industry. Leaving a question blank nets you a big fat zero! Answering a question gives your teacher and boss the oppurtunity to give you some credit for trying. Get it?

Re: A troubling generating function

I get it.

But,I still want to do the limit.

I am afraid you are going to have to do a little bit more than just showing that you know L'Hospitals rule.

Re: A troubling generating function

Let me find out what is the problem.

Supposing this was question1) on your exam. What would you write?

Re: A troubling generating function

I think I would try starting in many different ways and then just scribble over everything.

But,now when I look at it,I am wondering if it could be done by turning this into an integral.Maybe by bringing out n in front of the sum or something like that.

Yes,I succeeded doing that, and I got the same answer as you.I will go submit my answer to gAr.
