I got a suggestion we could play chess on the board with writing out our moves on the forum using the chess alegrebraic notation.

It's a nice idea, but I think it would take far too long and people would get bored of it too quickly.

Plus, we'd all need to learn chess notation.

I have played online chess, and I was beaten 2 games to 1 by a young Russian, a 11 year old!
But as mathsy said, it would take a lot of time if you post your moves.
I have got three interesting problems related to chess.

(1) Start with any square with a knight, move as a knight moves and cover all the remaining 63 squares. Don't go to a square you've already covered. You can do this by drawing a 8x8 chess board on paper, put 1 on the starting square, 2 on the second, 3 on the third, and so on. In the 63rd move, you have to reach the 64th square.

(2) Place the 8 pawns on the chess board, treating each as a Queen, and one should not fall in the line of attack of the other. You can post your solution by the usual a,b,c,d,ef,g,h and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 notation.

(3) Give the moves of the shortest complete game of chess possible.

I've done 2) by accident before, but I couldn't tell you a solution without doing it by accident again.

I can't remember the exact moves, but I think for 3), black wins on their 2nd turn.

And I've tried 1) many times and never succeeded.

3) I think this is it...
White: E2 to E4.
Black: E7 to E5.
White: F1 to C4.
Black: B8 to C6.
White: D1 to F3.
Black: C6 to D4.
White: F3 takes F7. Checkmate.

That's Fool's mate or Scholar's mate...

Two win?

It's based around the idea the white makes the right moves. Give me a few minutes.

I have thought about online chess. I believe that online gaming has cheats on it, though ... they use programs to advise them on moves.

But what would be wrong with Chess on the forum (between honourable friends) ... people used to play chess by mail!

Solution to (2) :
a4, b7, c5, d3, e1, f6, g8, h2.
For those who don't understand that.....
From the side facing you, start counting rows 1,2,3 upwards. Start from the extreme left column and go towards right. The sequence :-
4 7 5 3 1 6 8 2
(There are more arrangements possible, this is one of them).

Solution to (1) : I have done that a few times before, failed far more many times. But to mathsyperson, i'd suggest, start from the left knight's position and go in circles completing the outer layers and then enter the inner squares.

Solution to problem (3) : Black wins!
The moves:-
1. e 4, d6
2. f4, Qh4, Checkmate! Thats also known as Fool's mate! Probably Zach thought that wasn't an acceptable answer. But thats what I had in my mind at the time I posted the problem.

I don't get the answer to the third problem. How could the black queen get to the h4 square when the black pawn at e7 is blocking it.

This will be the position after 2. f4.

I like chess, but I only won a good player once when he started without a queen, and it still required a lot of thought. What about a team of people play against another team of people, but MathIsFun needs to create two "busy cards", one for each team that can be taken, so only one person can grab the busy card when they are going to make the next move, so two people don't make the next move for the same team at the same time. For example two posts, twenty seconds apart.

Combined chess-domino question:
Prove that the chessboard with two opposite corners cutted cannot be overlayed with 31 same domino bricks. Each of the brick overlays exactly 2 chessboard cells.

I also play chess, online and offline, though I'm not too good at it as I always lose to people who have strategies behind their moves.

Although I like playing chess, I haven't had the time to play it recently, because I have some other matters I have to handle with, though I would like to see some strategies or problems involving chess posted on this thread.

I don't have anything to provide you with, because I lack knowledge on it. I'm very sorry if it disappoints you, but I guess nothing can really help it.
