A Mathametical Speech

There is going to be a competition held where (probably) I am going to participate. Here, the participants would have to give a speech of around 5 minutes about a Mathematical Topic that is going to be delivered on the spot.

But before I could go there, there is elimination system within our school(which means the teachhe best candidate from within the school). Here, we are allowed to choose our own topic. So, today I spoke about the Fibonacci Series. But then my teacher said that I should talk about something in Class 8, 9, 10 syllabus and then he said to do the speech again tomorrow or the day-after.

Here is a list of things within this syllabus: Heron's Formula, Real Numbers, Polynomials, Linear Equations in Two Variables, Quadratic Equations, Arithmetic Progressions, Triangles, Coordinate Geometry, Introduction to Trigonometry, Circles, Areas, Volumes, Statistics, Probablity, Compound Interest
What should I speak about? I need a suggestion. Also explain me how should I talk about it and what things should I tell apart from defination.

'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.'
'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it'
I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

Re: A Mathametical Speech

Hi Agnishom;

Polynomials or Probability are the two most interesting topics on that list.

Start here

http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/polynomials.html

and follow all the links.

Or

http://www.mathsisfun.com/data/probability.html

When you are done here we can flesh out your speech with some more.

Re: A Mathametical Speech

hi Agnishom,

Have I got this correct?  If you win the school elimination round you then go in for the competition where the topic is given to you rather than you choosing it.

Re: A Mathametical Speech

So if you get chosen, you'll need to practise something else = how to deliver a good speech (on anything).

Do you get any notice / advanced warning, of a topic at all?

Does everyone get the same topic?

How do they make it fair to the early competitors if the later ones hear their speech?

What are the criteria for the judging ?

Re: A Mathametical Speech

No everyone doesn't get the same topic and the topic is given there just 15 minutes before the speech.
I don't know the answers to all of your questions

Re: A Mathametical Speech

Hhhmmm.  That's a tough challenge.

If everyone got the same topic then it would be unfair to the earlier presenters if later presenters could listen.  But, it seems that isn't the case.

Do you know the exact conditions for the speech such as size of room, size of audience, display board available, microphone ......

Let us know how your school speech goes.

Good luck.

Re: A Mathametical Speech

Here's what happened in school today:
I met my teacher in a blank class after school.
He instructed me to start my speech.
I gave my speech but massacred the last part a bit
He warned me about that
Then he called another teacher into the room and he instructed another candidate to give his speech
BTW he talked about congruence of triangles ( I could have chosen that topic but I didn't know what should I have told about it)
After he finished The FIRST teacher told me to deliver my speech once again because The SECOND teacher is present now
I gave the speech again
This time I did the end better but the FIRST speech was still better because I flushed some information from my brain after it sad
My teacher asked me a question which I couldn't answer because I couldn't understand it AT THAT MOMENT
However, I have it clear now

Anyway, it was OK
OH YEAH, your links did help a lot

I don't know whether our Maths teacher shall select me because he shall still judge a few more candidates.
But I think that he favors me.

I don't know all the conditions but here are some of them:
Participants are allowed to talk for 5 -6 minutes
The topic shall come from within a syllabus of Class 8, 9 and 10
There will be 40 marks on presentation, 20 on fluency, 10 on Question-Answer session 20 on a written test at the end ( I can't remember it!)
Participants are allowed to use upto 5 aids like charts, slides, etc

Here is a question about the last rule I just mentioned:
I don't think I shall be able to prepare a chart or slide with extreme perfection just within 15 minutes because I will have to think about what I shall speak about more than thinking about slides.
Do you think that I should use them?

Re: A Mathametical Speech

hi Agnishom,

My image of a blank class is row upon row of faces looking at me with blank expressions because they haven't understood a word.  smile

If you get picked, post to tell us and also when the competition is.

Heron's Formula, Real Numbers, Polynomials, Linear Equations in Two Variables, Quadratic Equations, Arithmetic Progressions, Triangles, Coordinate Geometry, Introduction to Trigonometry, Circles, Areas, Volumes, Statistics, Probablity, Compound Interest

Is this a complete list?

I may have some ideas.

Re: A Mathametical Speech

Hi Agnishom;

Do not use the slides if you are still struggling with other parts of your presentation. After this is over post your presentation or at least an outline of it. I would like to hear it.

Re: A Mathametical Speech

Tomorrow We have the final elimination in the school.
I am going to talk about probability.
Pls give me list of topics that is related to probability, so that I can enhance my knowledge for tomorrow

P.S.: Wish me Good Luck!

Well, statistics is greatly tied to probability.

Re: A Mathametical Speech

Theoretical and experimental probability
two events ... dependant and independent cases ... tree diagrams
Bayes theorem
interesting cases such as the Monty Hall problem and the chances of getting a particular card hand.

That should be enough for 15 minutes.

Bob

Good Luck!  smile

Re: A Mathametical Speech

"Like me"?
What am I like?
No, no I am extremely different from anybody in my school
E.g., I am self-proclaimed insane (Some other people also tell that they are insanes but they are actually lying about it except that I seriously believe it)

Sometimes when Alokananda becomes angry, I  tell her to forgive me because I am actually insane
Then she giggles and tells me that I am very different.

Re: A Mathametical Speech

Hi Agnishom

Bobbym probably asked if everyone in your school stays calm and keeps his cool like you. It is a magnificent thing to have, the ability to stay calm at certain situations. It would be very good if your whole school was like that (which it is probably not).
