Exact arithmetic

Please help me understand how to do this question, and where i can get info to understand it thoroughly.

Using Exact arithmetic, compute the value of 3y-x/2x  for x=1.00     and y=3.00

Assuming that the values of x and y are correctly rounded to 2 decimal places, find absolute and relative error bounds for your answer. Give your answer as a correctly rounded number.

I would be very grateful if someone could help me.

Thank you

Re: Exact arithmetic

Let's see. So after the values are input to the letters, the expression shall be like this:

3 x 3.00 - 1.00 / 2 x 1.00

Then it shall be calculated.

3 x 3 - 1 / 2 x 1

= 9 - 1/2

= 8 + 1/2

The answer is 8 and 1/2. If it is changed into decimal form, it shall be 8.5, and rounded up two decimal places will be 8.50.

So the final answer is 8.50.

Hope that helped.
