A confusing money puzzle

A lady goes to a jewellery shop and chooses a necklace costing $200. She gives a $1000 rupee note to the shopkeeper. But the shopkeeper did not have changes, so he went to the next shop to change the $1000 note into a $800 note and $200 note. He gave the lady $800 and she happily went away.

After a while, the next shopkeeper came in rushing and informed that the $1000 rupee note was fake. So the jeweller had to give him back $1000.

How much loss did the jeweller suffer(considering the standard selling and cost price of the necklace to be same)?

Re: A confusing money puzzle

I think it's either 800 or 1000

Re: A confusing money puzzle

Why not 1200?
He lost the necklace of 200, he had to give back 1000

Re: A confusing money puzzle

Did the jeweler buy or made the necklace using $200 rupees?

Re: A confusing money puzzle

The jeweller already had a necklace costing 200

Re: A confusing money puzzle

Try drawing this. In the beginning, the lady had nothing (actually, she had a 1000, but it isn't worth anything), the first jeweller had a necklace and the second jeweller had 800$+200$. Then the first jeweller received the lady's 0, gave her a necklace and gave it to the second one receiving from him the 1000$. Now the lady has a necklace, the first jeweller has 800$+200$ and the third jeweller has nothing. The first jeweller then gives the lady 800$ and is left with 200$. Then he gives the first jeweller 1000$ after the scam had been discovered and is left with -800$. And at this point the story ends. Let's look at how much gain/loss everybody has. The lady had nothing and ends up with 800$+a necklace=1000$, so that's a 1000$ gain. The second jeweller has 1000$ in the beginning and has that much in the end so he has neither gained nor lost. The first jeweller, however, had a necklace worth 200$, but ended up with -800$, whoch would be a 1000$ loss. So the answer is 1000$.
