Straight lines and circles

Draw 4 points, not belonging (altogether) on the same straight line or same circle. How many straight lines and circles are equidistant from these 4 points? Just to clarify, the definition of the distance of a point P from a circle with center C, is the straight PA, where A is the node of the straight PC with the circle circumference. Please explain the reasoning! smile

I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it.
All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof.

I worked on this problem a while back, I remember I came across this solution in "Challenging Mathematical Problems With Elementary Solutions Vol 1" by Yaglom and Yaglom. I did not understand his solution then and I am no smarter now. I am sorry for not being able to provide more.

I can copy their solution like a chimpanzee would, word for word if you like.
