Do you feel you do not have one?

Re: Interesting Conversation

I did not build myself, so the purpose of me is in my creator's mind.

Interesting to see where modern man is going...

Is it an insult?

No insult intended.

If my mom was saying that quote, it means that she is upset over me

I understand your Mom. I was rather surprised by your statement. But upset and amazement are not the same as an insult.

Re: Interesting Conversation

In Islam they say a mans purpose is to be a useful servant of God. In Catholicism, it is to know God, to love God and to serve God. In yoga, to attain samahdi. In Hinduism, to attain awareness of the Atman.

In the west the people have lost sight of their purpose and wander like a leaf on the ocean. I am amazed to see that it has spread to the east too.

To answer your question, I was never smart enough to be able to know what it was.

Re: Interesting Conversation

Why is my idea bad?

noun: purpose; plural noun: purposes

    1.
the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

noun: goal; plural noun: goals

    2.
the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.

> There is a difference between goal and purpose.
    >We create our goals but not our purposes.
    >If life has some purpose, then the purpose is in the minds of creator.

> If he has not hardcoded the purpose in us, why should we assume something randomly?
     > Or even try to find it?

> Even if there is a purpose for which we were built, why should we abide by it?

> If there exists some conscious being like God then
     > Why should we respect him, serve him or love him?
     > Why is he good?
     > What is he good for?
     > Why would he have created life for such a paradoxical purpose?

> As in the Second Chapter of the Gita, the atman is a being which we are and a being which existed eternally.
     > If some being exists eternally, it was not created. It cannot have a purpose.
     > If your sentence makes some sense, it means that: What we are assuming life is actually an illussion which is barring us from the truth.
     > Substituting that back into the orginal form, the purpose of the illussion is to get rid of the illusion. That is a paradox which actually makes life pointless

Re: Interesting Conversation

You have asked many questions, it would take days to even unload the small amount of knowledge I have. I can try some of the easier ones:

Or even try to find it?

Until you find it you will never attain happiness. No matter how much drugs, liquor, food, intimacy, knowledge, money and power a person can stuff into a single lifetime he will always be seeking something more. Those things leave a person always wanting more.

Aha! That makes the ultimate purpose of life to attain ultimate happiness. The purpose of life in post 110 would then come second to it.

You have asked many questions, it would take days to even unload the small amount of knowledge I have. I can try some of the easier ones:

You do not have to answer them. I want you to answer the following:

Why is my idea bad?

'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.'

Re: Interesting Conversation

No one said happiness is the purpose. Happiness is a by-product of the statements in post #110. Those are the purpose of life to those particular groups.

Which idea are you talking about?

Re: Interesting Conversation

If no one said it, then I will.
When I asked you why is it required to find the purpose, you said that it is the only thing that can give happiness. Again, you think the purpose is important, which means you think that getting happiness is important. Thus happiness is the ultimate purpose. Period.

Have you heard the phrase 'Sat-Chit-Ananda'?

I am talking about: Why are you upset because I do not think I've been built for a purpose?

Re: Interesting Conversation

Nope, the purpose is given in post #110, happiness is a by-product.

I am talking about: Why are you upset because I do not think I've been built for a purpose?

I said I was surprised. If you believe in a creator, an intelligent one then how can you not have a purpose? Do you write a long program that has no purpose? That does nothing? That is random commands? Of course not. Do you imagine that the creator just made it all because he was bored or there was nothing on tv that day?

Yes, I do believe that. He too wants happiness(the ultimate purpose) and is therefore just like us.

Hmmm, so writing large programs that have no meaning brings you happiness?

That I can not say. I do not think so but I will not be able to convince you that you have a purpose.

I am going to go offline see you later.

Re: Interesting Conversation

Suppose I have a purpose which means that I have been created for some purpose, so what should I do about it? Whether I want or not want to hit the purpose will not matter the Creator because if it did, he would have hard-coded the purpose in our minds. He will get the job done, if any, through me by hook or by crook whether I know it or not, or find it or not.

My conceptualisation of God certainly is NOT(Omnipotent AND Omniscient). What about yours?

That is true. An old saying is,

The oxen is slow but the earth is patient.

What about yours?

Some beliefs do not allow you to speak about God. Mine is that he is the creator of all things. He has a purpose for all things.

See you later, got to get off.

Re: Interesting Conversation

If your God is Not(omniscient and omnipresent) it still leaves the possibility of one of those being true.

I am not sure what I believe, but I certainly like the concept of pure thought being the God.
