Re: Is there such a function?

Depends on your point of view. Management always thinks employees are overpaid and lazy. They always think they are underpaid and heading for greatness. The employees, always think they are underpaid, overworked and unappreciated, not necessarily in that order.

I am sorry about that. I will rush into the Customer Care and tell them I appreciate them a lot.

Re: Is there such a function?

That would be a good idea. You could chat them up just for the chance to say what a great job they are doing and how much you admire and want to be like them.

But we are straying way off course in this thread.

Re: Is there such a function?

That, of course, is true.

Re: Is there such a function?

Speaking of which, here is a question.

Does every non-constant periodic function have a smallest positive period?

Re: Is there such a function?

I do not get it. What is the period of e^x?

Re: Is there such a function?

It is not periodic, so it does not have a period.

Re: Is there such a function?

Post 59 says nothing about whether the function should be periodic.

Do you know what Gilligan is?

If one extends the definition of exp to the complex numbers, then it is 2πi-periodic, making it very useful for parametrising contours in the complex plane.

Re: Is there such a function?

Hi zetafunc;

Do you think there is a function that has uncountable infinte strict extremas?

Re: Is there such a function?

The Weierstrass function comes to mind, but I think that has a countable number of strict extrema. You might be able to show this via a proof by contradiction (i.e. assuming that there exists an uncountable number of strict extrema).

Of course, the Weierstrass function has no such extrema if they are required to be smooth. I'll have to think about this one.

Re: Is there such a function?

Well, as it was shown that no function can have uncountable extrema, the Weierstrass function cannot have uncountable extrema.

You can visualise a sine wave whose frequency drops as you go to the right

Re: Is there such a function?

Hm, but that function would not be periodic.

Re: Is there such a function?

What does "smallest" period mean? How many periods could be there?

Re: Is there such a function?

Smallest means exactly what you think it would mean. I don't think there is any ambiguity there.

Well, every periodic function has infinitely many periods.

It is, but can you find such a function?

Re: Is there such a function?

Well, it certainly does exist.

Think of it this way: If you take any number that's a period, there is a number smaller than that one that's also a period.
