Leonardo Pisano Bogollo, as well as being famous for the Fibonacci Sequence, helped spread Hindu-Arabic Numerals through Europe in place of Roman Numerals.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about him was his uncanny skill in solving high degree polynomials long before the formulas were discovered. Around 1225 AD he determined the roots of this equation

with an error less than 10^-9. No one knows how he did it back then but clearly my paisan and distant cugino was very skillful at iteration making him the first EM.
