Re: simple logic yet difficult

hi math9maniac and Agnishom,

Whoops!  I seem to be slow at answering these questions.

Seriously Bob, you don't have a cell phone? So how do you get in touch with friends and family?

I have a land line phone.  Mostly that works for me.  smile

I cannot do texting.  (1)  I mis-type a lot.  (2)  Predictive texting drives me mad  (3) I don't have an overwhelming desire to play games or take pictures.  (4)  I prefer the real world.

What relationship exists between Bob and Alice?

We're just good friends.  Try to suggest anything more and I'll sue.

Maths topics.  OK. Thanks for the topic list.  If you want help with any just post.  There's some very good material on the maths is fun main website.

I don't know Eve at all.  If she wants to meet Alice that's fine by me.  If she's expecting dinner too, we may have to negotiate.

Is Alice a member here?

Predictive texting is fun. Have you seen my Kaboobly Doo machine?

Alice is rarely 'here' in the sense you mean.

She used to hang out in a rabbit hole;  but then she slipped through to the world on the other side of a mirror and hasn't been heard from since.  Curiouser and curiouser.

I haven't seen your machine.  Have you lost it ?

That is really a good thing about Alice.

Here is my kaboobly doo machine: http://kabooblydoo.appspot.com

It works on the principle of Predictive text

Almost as random as my predictive text.

If I want custom, where do I input my custom text.

Off to wash the car.  Back later.

Re: simple logic yet difficult

Just use the large text box.

If you had a phone you would not need to buy a car, you could've just called the people you want to visit

Re: simple logic yet difficult

Hey there Bob

I guess I'm a pro when it comes to texting that it annoys my brother just watching me with the keypad. For me, predictive texting saves time. Games and pictures are not much of a priority for me. I just want to go on the Internet anytime I feel like with little or no hindrance. Yes, there is a landline phone at home but it can't be my alarm clock, very poor with texting, can't be my to-do lisy and remind me of important information and oh! Where is the music?

You can't get me one but you can pray that I get one soon or let Agnishom get me one.

Wow. LOL.

Some "all-knowing" people I know will call this out of context but I believe it does some great humor. Can't stop laughing cos it IS funny.

In literature what do we call this: satire or sarcasm?

lol

Re: simple logic yet difficult

Definitely sarcasm.  Don't forget I trained as a teacher.  The first term was devoted to lessons in sarcasm. smile

I see. So you're a teacher of almost every subject?

How can you be sarcastic while still being polite?

My Math teacher is not making the study of MECHANICS interesting and fun at all. He should break it down and simplify the topic for those of us who don't really click with Science.

Need some help please.

Re: simple logic yet difficult

I trained as a maths teacher with science subsidiary.  At my first school I also had the opportunity to teach astronomy.

When I started there were no computers in schools!  My computing knowledge is all self taught.  I played a part in the introduction of computers into the classroom and later taught both computer science and computer studies (analogy: car mechanics and learning to drive).

I was fairly good at mechanics so I may be able to help.  Post what you need help with. (probably best to start a new thread or I may miss it).

I tell my class about the sarcasm lessons.  It takes a while for the 'penny to drop'.

Re: simple logic yet difficult

Was the Science compulsory because it came with the course or you actually decided to study Science as a subsidiary? How long did it take to train as a teacher of Math?

I really like people who know something in their lives because it's "self-taught".

You mean your class doesn't immediately understand the sarcasm?

Re: simple logic yet difficult

All three sciences were compulsory from age 11 to 13.  After that you could choose to continue to O level.

I did a three year maths degree and then one year teacher training.

It takes a while to realise that the statement about sarcasm is itself sarcastic.  smile

I am not usually cruel to my pupils but some actions make it necessary.  One text book had the answers at the back.  The chapter was about line and rotation symmetry.  One boy had got (1) 2 lines of symmetry and (2) rotational symmetry order 3 correct.  The third question was (3) Draw a shape with rotational symmetry order 2 but no lines of symmetry.  His answer was (3) Show your picture to your teacher.  smile

Oh. I see. So after the degree and teacher training, you haven't done any further course? Would you say the study for the degree was somewhat difficult?

@bob, you told me this story before but weren't the questions different?

Re: simple logic yet difficult

hi Agnishom,

To tell the truth, I cannot remember exactly what the questions were, just his answer to Q3.  It'd be a shame to be unable to tell the story just because of that so I made up Q1 and Q2 both times.  It was certainly a set of questions about symmetry and the third question definitely said to draw a picture.  And that's the point: The book couldn't give a picture as an answer hence the 'Show your picture.....' answer.  Also my memory isn't so great that I remember telling the story more than once.  I might have told it three times.  Now we have fully analysed the script hopefully you'll forgive me and we can move on.  smile

math9maniac wrote:

Yes, but I enjoyed it.  Up until that level, I can still remember and do the maths I was taught.  But most of the university stuff has long since faded from my memory.  If someone asks a question here about one of those topics I can sometimes do some research and remind myself, but some of it I never really understood properly.  I did get asked to explain stuff by fellow students, so it seems the teaching aspect was beginning to kick in, even then.

When the government decided to give each school its first computer ( a research machine 380 Z ) the school had to have two teachers qualified to use it.  Much to his amusement, my head of department was considered qualified as he had done a course ten years before (and forgotten most of it) but I was not.  So I had to go to college to learn how to put a floppy disc in a machine to load up an operating system smile .  As I could do stuff like that I was allowed to sit in the corner and write a program in BASIC.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for feedback. I'm asking all these questions because I also want to pursue Mathematics at the tertiary level of my education. Did you do the Math alongside teacher training or the education specialty came later?

Re: simple logic yet difficult

hi math9maniac

Been on holiday to the Land of the Midnight Sun.  Just got back.

I did a maths degree (B.Sc) , then a one year teacher training course (PGCE).  But some students to a B.Ed course for 3 years, specialising in maths.
