In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

May I see your code?

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

There is a very good reason why you may not.

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

Yes, I do not have any code at all other than a slow simulation using something like yours.

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

What is the size of the tree for n kegs?

I do not know but I know what it is for a Markov chain.

I believe it is like n! or (n-1)!

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

Do you have the answer for 10? 10! is not really very large.

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

I have a simulation answer for any amount I want. But an exact answer...nope.

A closed form might not exist.

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

That only again shows the ineptness of mathematics and those blasted methods.

This is part of a problem posed elsewhere and I can not solve it and neither can they.

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

The keg problem? No, but I think about it every day. Remember the mighty gAr could not solve it so it is very very tough.

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

Wait, what? Does this problem date back to the days of gAr?

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

Yes, it does but not over here.

I first saw this problem over here:

http://math.stackexchange.com/questions … 74#1581374

Following one of the most basic rules of EM,

If you can not solve a big problem try to solve a smaller one of the same type.

Of course I would like to solve it for 100 containers.

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

Hmm, how about we try caching some portions of the tree?

Re: Ten Cool Experimental Mathematics Problems

We could try that but I have been looking at something that would not have to generate the tree!
