positive and negative slopes

f(t) = x^2 The slope of the graph of y = f(t) is negative ( or negative velocity ) for x < 0 and positive (or positive velocity) for x > 0.

please explain how is that? please without giving me the derivatives because I want a simple example or graph without derivative
