to the power of

Hi,
How do I work out a number to the power of another number on a calculator?

Like if you have a row of five switches, and each switch can be in one of two
positions, the number of possible combinations for the row is two to the power
of five.

It depends what calculator you're using. If it's a scientific one, then the function ought to be there, but the symbols can vary a bit.

The symbol on yours is probably either ^ or x[sup]y[/sup].

Press these buttons in the following order:

That should give you 2[sup]5[/sup].

You can also use the scientific calculator on Windows. Run CALC.EXE and, under View, choose Scientific.
