Of course, then the massive weight of this planar hanger is going to have to be considered. dizzy

Ok.

But if we only plotted the points were hanger meets main cable, then we have a parabola.

Still, to be exact, allow me to say that it's only near parabola for in-continousity.

I don't quite understand why you would say "near parabola". With the assumption that each "piece" of cable supports the weight of the bridge directly beneath it you get a function x^2. And this assumption is born out of engineering reality.

I would have assumed the shape would be a catenary. But it appears I am wrong:

"The physicists defer only to mathematicians, and the mathematicians defer only to God ..."  - Leon M. Lederman

I'm actually an experimentalist, so I spend most of my time fixing the mathematician's eyeglasses and explaining why their cars make some funny noise.

You have the right format, just replace "link" with "url".

Hello, I'm Chris. I am a physicist finishing up my Ph.D. in chemical physics in Richmond, VA. I had taught both high school and college level physics for several years before going back to school. Now I'm a student once again (the only job I've held consistently.)

I founded the physics website ilovephysics.com, and we are coming up on our 2 year anniversary. Unfortunately, on our one year anniversary we lost everything due to a hacker, and have been slowly building back since. I discovered this forum through the punBB forum (the site that supports the script that runs both this site and mine.)

To support myself as I plug through courses and research, I founded two online business - J.C. Moore Guitars and KeyLiberty Marketing. I chronical my successes and failures on my business blog KeyLiberty.com.

That's all.

I surfed on to this site from the punBB site. Looks good.

Have you thought about adding LaTeX support to the board? I have written a punBB mod called punLaTeX to do this using mimeTex. It allows for easy insertion of in-line equations. See more at the following URL:

It has really added to my forums usability. See an example here:
