Re: What do you think?

hi bobbym and gAr

sorry for posting here but i really don't like opening new topics, and all others are occupied by non-solved questions so i don't want to interrupt.

i know an interesting problem:
we have a polynomial:

find the sum of coefficients with even exponents (x^2010,x^2008,...,x^2,x^0=1).

Re: What do you think?

Hi anonimnystefy,

Are we supposed to find the sum of even coefficients only upto x^2010?

Re: What do you think?

hi gAr

not even coefficients but the sum of coefficients of terms with an even exponent.

If we were asked to do the same with:

the answer would be 5+1=6.

Re: What do you think?

Yes, I understood that. What I was asking was whether it should be summed until x^2010 or  x^6024?

Hi gAr;

Sorry, I was away and could not get in on the coefficient problem.

Anyways, your solution to the 4 dice problem is correct. Very good!

Hi bobbym,

Thanks, that's ok.
I hope you too solved the same way?

Yes, but only after 2 dead ends. I did not get it immediately.

Re: What do you think?

hi gAr

your solution is correct but i made a mistake it should be 1/2 instead of 2 in the outermost exponent.sorry once again

Re: What do you think?

New Problem:

Three neighborhoods exist on a cartesian grid at (0,0), ( 0, 400 ) and ( 375, 0 ).

Each neighborhood has 2300, 2400 and 2250 people respectively. All the neighborhood people work at the same factory. The amazing thing is that the factory is located at a lattice point on the grid ( x and y are integers ). Also amazing is the fact that the factory is situated so that the total distance the 6950 people travel each day is a minimum ( by euclidean distance ). All we know is that the factory due to zoning laws must be 10 or more blocks from any neighborhood ( by manhattan distance ).

Where is the factory located?

A says) Easy, factory is at (11 , 5 ).
B says) It can be done but it is not easy.
C says) What are Manhattan and Euclidean distances?
D says) Look here, there is a diagram.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxicab_geometry
E says) I have the answer. The problem is called a F...
B says) Hold on E, do not blurt out the answer!
