Science Website Names

I want to start working on a Science website, the first step is to find a name. Most names are taken (such as ScienceIsFun), but I have these options so far (at differing prices):

Science HQ           sciencehq.com
Science Partner     sciencepartner.com
Unlock Science      unlockcience.com

Which do you prefer?

Re: Science Website Names

Hi MathsIsFun,

The website and the redireced URL Science HQ is fine! In my opinion!

Hi MIF;

I am going to agree with ganesh, Science HQ!

hi MathsIsFun

I, too, think that Science HQ is best.  Hope it's the cheapest.  smile

Hi;

Then by all means go with the cheapest. Art will just have to take a back seat.

Re: Science Website Names

My rating:
Science HQ
Unlock Science
Learn Science
Science Partners

What's the rating by the prices?

What is the pricing formula?  Then we can make a brilliant suggestion that's low cost.

Re: Science Website Names

If MIF would supply some value for how much he likes each one and then the price the best choice can be determined by game theory.

I wish there were a pricing formula! People buy up names and then just sit on them waiting for offers. Sometimes there is a fixed price, sometimes an auction, other times it is negotiation.

Hi MIF;

I was only half serious about the game theory. I consider game theory kaboobly doo. You will have to use your judgement.

Re: Science Website Names

Sci&sIsFun (named after Le-a)

Is it less expensive for a name that hasn't been thought up yet?
Is it less expensive for a shorter name?
Are some dot-whatevers (vs .com .edu .org etc.) less expensive?
Are they not more flexible now in assigning the dot-whatevers?  Could something like fun.science
   be registered?

Just wondering what some of the parameters are.

(1/2)(great day)! smile

Re: Science Website Names

These answers are "to the best of my knowledge" and I am no expert:

Is it less expensive for a name that hasn't been thought up yet?     => Yes indeed, like $10 to register a new name vs $1,000s that people want for names they already have.
Is it less expensive for a shorter name?      => not for new names, but people want heaps more for shorter names.
Are some dot-whatevers (vs .com .edu .org etc.) less expensive?          =>  .com is the most sought after,  .net is the "I couldn't get the name in .com" website
Are they not more flexible now in assigning the dot-whatevers?  Could something like fun.science be registered?       things like .science would be VERY expensive and needs to be specially applied for with reasons etc.

Re: Science Website Names

Hi! smile

So it would be nice to come up with a new name that is cute, easy to remember, and suggestive of what it represents.  Surely with the great minds that are regulars on this site a new neat novel
name can be come up with that won't cost an arm and a leg.

Does it cost the same every year to keep that name?  If you "buy" a name does whomever you
bought the name from keep some rights to it so that you have to pay more each year to maintain the right to use the name?

Just some more thoughts b4 I hit the sack!  Gotta get some zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's

MIF wrote:

So what you really want is to outwit the cybersquatters?

So ask the members of MIF to make imaginative suggestions

eg. How about psy-ence is fun ? or something similar. (You would need a front page explanation for new members)

Or even a new name that no one will have thought of:

Many years ago a group of teachers at the school I was at, were starting an after school club that would do interesting things right across the field of education.  Various names were suggested such as 'Archimedians', 'Wise Owls', etc.  We couldn't agree at all and a vote on five or six suggestions just led to a tie.

I was searching though en encyclopedia trying to get a new idea when I noticed that both Shakesspeare and Galileo were born in 1564 and it was the year of the death of Michelangelo.  I suggested we give the club the temporary name 1564 without saying why and have two competition amongst the pupils.

comp 1: How many explanations can you research for 1564?  The winner found over 30.  My favourite: it's the brain size in cc of the average 1564 club member.

comp 2: Come up with a better name.  Now here's the strange thing ... As the weeks went by and the club got a reputation for doing fun things the name began to stick.  Everyone knew what it was and what it did and used the name quite happily.  If anyone new asked why they were given the research task.  So the name was made permanent.

I can understand why you want a name that tells people what the site is for, but, after a while, what pulls people in is the number of hits.  eg.  The question "How do I work out an average?" still gets MIF as the top hit in Google.

That is a cool story about 1564, Bob!

And your and neolevans suggestion to brainstorm names sounds really good.

Must have the word "science" in it. Go.

Re: Science Website Names

Both "thesciencelibrary.com" and "sciencelibrary.com" are free (not in the sense of price, though tongue).

You can also have something like "*a name of a scientist*sworkshop.com" (no "science" in it, tough...)

sciencelibrary.com is for sale I see, well done.

I need to add some new rules: no "_", and no numbers either.
