### Brilliant mathematical minds

Received some pictures in a email from a friend:

I can't remember if anyone has already posted these here ... and don't have time to crawl through the archives.

Lovely! The "six" one is somewhere, but the others are new to me.

### Re: Brilliant mathematical minds

Actually, I am intrigued by this question in the first paper itself:

What’s the definition “coming to rest” anyway? Doesn’t it mean that the object no longer continues to move? Or is this a question on the English language rather than physics?

### Re: Brilliant mathematical minds

I always thought rest meant that the net force on the object was 0.

"In the real world, this would be a problem.  But in mathematics, we can just define a place where this problem doesn't exist.  So we'll go ahead and do that now..."

### Re: Brilliant mathematical minds

That would just mean that the object isn't accelerating.

### Re: Brilliant mathematical minds

I think coming to rest just means that the velocity at a certain time is 0.
If there is a net force on the object then the rest will only be instantaneous, but it will be rest nonetheless.

I like how the answer in Toast's third picture got a mark.

Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.

### Re: Brilliant mathematical minds

That’s what I understand by coming to rest – the velocity becomes 0.

When there’s no net force, the acceleration is 0 but the velocity doesn’t have to be 0.

### Re: Brilliant mathematical minds

I'm with the student in the last image of Toast's post. (S)he answered the question as asked. It absolutely infuriates me when teachers ask things in such an ambiguous way that you have no idea what to do.

My other favorite is "discuss"--"Discuss the function f...". The only sensible response is, "What about it do you want to know?" But you can't very well put that if you expect points on the assignment.

Yes, I'm bitter.

If you pay more attention, it will come to your attention that it is not in fact a moon, but your incorrect judgement.
