#1021. Name the medical term / phrase : It is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid. It frequently results in hyperthyroidism and an enlarged thyroid. Signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism may include irritability, muscle weakness, sleeping problems, a fast heartbeat, poor tolerance of heat, diarrhea, and weight loss. Other symptoms may include thickening of the skin on the shins, known as pretibial myxedema, and eye problems such as bulging. About 25% to 80% of people with the condition develop eye problems.

Hi bobbym,

Excellent, bobbtm!

#1022, Name the medical term /definition -  A muscle in the hand. It is of a triangular form, and placed immediately beneath the palmaris brevis, abductor minimi digiti, and flexor brevis minimi digiti. It is one of the three hypothenar muscles that controls the little finger. It arises from the convexity of the hamulus of the hamate bone, and contiguous portion of the transverse carpal ligament; it is inserted into the whole length of the metacarpal bone of the little finger, along its ulnar margin. It serves to flex and laterally rotate the 5th metacarpal about the 5th carpometacarpal joint, as when bringing little finger and thumb into opposition. It is innervated by the deep branch of the ulnar nerve.

Hi bobbym,

Well done, bobbym! 50% correct!

#1023. Name the medical term / phrase (abbreviation) : The established medical imaging technique that uses light to capture micrometer-resolution, three-dimensional images from within optical scattering media (e.g., biological tissue). It is based on low-coherence interferometry, typically employing near-infrared light. The use of relatively long wavelength light allows it to penetrate into the scattering medium. Confocal microscopy, another optical technique, typically penetrates less deeply into the sample but with higher resolution. Depending on the properties of the light source (superluminescent diodes, ultrashort pulsed lasers, and supercontinuum lasers have been employed), it has achieved sub- micrometer resolution (with very wide-spectrum sources emitting over a ~100 nm wavelength range).

Hi David,

The Answer #1023 (Optical coherence tomography (OCT)) is perfect! Marvelous, David!

#1024. Name the medical term / phrase -  A congenital heart defect in which the septal and posterior leaflets of the tricuspid valve are displaced towards the apex of the right ventricle of the heart. The annulus of the valve is still in the normal position. The valve leaflets, however, are to a varying degree, attached to the walls and septum of the right ventricle. There is subsequent 'atrialization' of a portion of the morphologic right ventricle (which is then contiguous with the right atrium). This causes the right atrium to be large and the anatomic right ventricle to be small in size.

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi bobbym,

#1025. Name the medical term / phrase -  (also known as "aortic arch syndrome", "nonspecific aortoarteritis" and the "pulseless disease") It is a form of large vessel granulomatous vasculitis with massive intimal fibrosis and vascular narrowing, affecting often young or middle-aged women of Asian descent. It mainly affects the aorta (the main blood vessel leaving the heart) and its branches, as well as the pulmonary arteries. Females are about 8-9 times more likely to be affected than males. Those with the disease often notice symptoms between 15 and 30 years of age. In the Western world, atherosclerosis is a more frequent cause of obstruction of the aortic arch vessels than this. It is similar to other forms of vasculitis, including giant cell arteritis which typically affects older individuals. Due to obstruction of the main branches of the aorta, including the left common carotid artery, the brachiocephalic artery, and the left subclavian artery, it can present as pulseless upper extremities (arms, hands, and wrists with weak or absent pulses on the physical examination) which may be why it is also commonly referred to as the "pulseless disease". Involvement of renal arteries may lead to presentation as renovascular hypertension.

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi bobbym,

#1026. In humans, the cartilaginous bar of the mandibular arch is formed by what are known as Meckel’s cartilages (right and left) also known as Meckelian cartilages; above this the incus and malleus are developed. Meckel's Cartilage arises from the first pharyngeal arch. Johann Friedrich Meckel, the Younger discovered this  in 1820.
With which part of the body is it related?

Hi bobbym,

The Answer #1026 is correct! Excellent!

#1027. Name the medical phrase / abbreviation :   (SCC or SqCC) A a cancer of a kind of epithelial cell, the squamous cell. These cells are the main part of the epidermis of the skin, and this cancer is one of the major forms of skin cancer. However, squamous cells also occur in the lining of the digestive tract, lungs, and other areas of the body, and SCC occurs as a form of cancer in diverse tissues, including the lips, mouth, esophagus, urinary bladder, prostate, lung, math, and cervix, among others. Despite sharing the name squamous-cell carcinoma, the SCCs of different body sites can show tremendous differences in their presenting symptoms, natural history, prognosis, and response to treatment. SCC is a histologically distinct form of cancer. It arises from the uncontrolled multiplication of cells of epithelium, or cells showing particular cytological or tissue architectural characteristics of squamous-cell differentiation, such as the presence of keratin, tonofilament bundles, or desmosomes, structures involved in cell-to-cell adhesion.

Hi bobbym,

Thr Answer #1027 (Squamous-cell carcinoma or squamous-cell cancer (SCC or SqCC)) is perfect! Excellent!

#1028.  Name the infectious disease caused by bacteria of the Borrelia type. The most common sign of infection is an expanding area of redness, known as erythema migrans, that begins at the site of a tick bite about a week after it has occurred. The rash is typically neither itchy nor painful. About 25% of people do not develop a rash. Other early symptoms may include fever, headache, and feeling tired. If untreated, symptoms may include loss of the ability to move one or both sides of the face, joint pains, severe headaches with neck stiffness, or heart palpitations, among others. Months to years later, repeated episodes of joint pain and swelling may occur. Occasionally, people develop shooting pains or tingling in their arms and legs. Despite appropriate treatment, about 10 to 20% of people also develop joint pains, have memory problems, and feel tired much of the time. It is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks of the Ixodes genus. Usually, the tick must be attached for 36 to 48 hours before the bacteria can spread. In North America, the only bacterium involved is Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, while in Europe and Asia, the bacteria Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii are also causes of the disease. The disease does not appear to be transmissible between people, by other animals, or through food. Diagnosis is based upon a combination of symptoms, history of tick exposure, and possibly testing for specific antibodies in the blood. Blood tests are often negative in the early stages of the disease. Testing of individual ticks is not typically useful.

Hi David,

#1030. Name the medical term / phrase - It is a foot deformity. The bones in the front half of the foot bend or turn in toward the body.
Causes : It is thought to be caused by the infant's position inside the womb. Risks may include:
The baby's bottom was pointed down in the womb (breech position).
The mother had a condition called oligohydramnios, in which she did not produce enough amniotic fluid.
There may also be a family history of the condition.

It is a fairly common problem. It is one of the reasons why people develop "in-toeing."
Newborns with this may also have a problem called developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). This allows the thigh bone slips out of the hip socket.
Symptoms - The front of the foot is bent or angled in toward the middle of the foot. The back of the foot and the ankles are normal. About half of children with this have the problem in both feet.
(Club foot is a different problem. The foot is pointed down and the ankle is turned in.)

Hi bobbym,

#1031. Name the medical term / phrase -  A progressive kidney disease caused by damage to the capillaries in the kidneys' glomeruli.  It is characterized by nephrotic syndrome and diffuse scarring of the glomeruli. It is due to longstanding diabetes mellitus, and is a prime reason for dialysis in many developed countries. It is classified as a small blood vessel complication of diabetes. During its early course, it often has no symptoms. Symptoms can take 5 to 10 years to appear after the kidney damage begins. These late symptoms include severe tiredness, headaches, a general feeling of illness, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, itchy skin, and leg swelling.
Causes - The cause of it is not well understood, but it is thought that high blood sugar, advanced glycation end product formation, and cytokines may be involved in the development of this.
Kidney damage is likely if one or more of the following is present:
    Poor control of blood glucose
    High blood pressure
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (before age 20)
    History of cigarette smoking
A family history of kidney problems.
