OK, here is the 3rd and last problem that is stumping Mom:
Mr. Johannsen and Mr. Yan have decided to seperate their property by placing a fence along the property line. They ordered enough fence posts so that the fence would have posts placed 8 feet apart. However, 5 of the posts were not usable. They were still able to put the fence up by placing the remaining posts 10 feet apart. How many fence posts did they originally order?
Any help today is appreciated!

It looks like my dear daughter actually has 3 problems to complete, and I can't help her...oh my! Here's the 2nd problem:
On a string of 15 opals, the center stone is the largest and the most expensive. Starting from one end, including the center stone, each opal is worth $50 more than the previous one. Starting at the other end and including the center stone, each opal is worth $25 more than the previous one. The total value of the 15 opals is $4,650. What is the value of the center opal?
Any help or insight that you can provide today is appreciated!

My daughter is having trouble with this math problem for school. I am stumped, too, and cannot figure out how to help her. Here it is:
Sue is watching her Uncle George lay down sod in Caver Park. He must cover an area of 40 feet square, but he wants to leave a square in the center of the lawn, equaling one fourth of the total area. Sue gets to plant that central area with marigolds, her favorite flowers. The sod that Uncle George is laying down comes in widths of 2 feet. If he starts unrolling the sod at one corner of the square and continues unrolling it around the edge, working his way to the center, how many trips around the square will he make with the sod?
This is due tomorrow, so any help that you can offer today (Mon.) would be greatly appreciated.

My daughter brought home algebra problems as HW tonight. We think we used PEMDAS correctly but came up with different answers to the first two problems. Can someone help us before we go on? Here are the first two problems on the worksheet:
9 + 6 x (7 - 3) x 2 to the 3rd power = either 480 or 201 ??
3 to the 3rd power x (6 + 4) - 5 + 10 = either 165 or 275 ??
Many thanks!
Mom and Daughter
