Thanks to both of you! I was able to solve with bobs push in the right direction and I was able to check my work with bobbyms contribution.

Hi guys,
I've been having some trouble solving the below equation for B:

I have a blind spot for this one and I need to get on the right path. What is the first step to solving this?

Excellent. A second set of eyes paid off. Thanks!

Hi All,
I'm working on an integration problem and I'm not certain how to approach it:

What I've been attempting so far is to distribute the x squared:

I end up with:

Is this correct? If not how should I approach this?

Another trick that helps me with LaTex is that if you click on "quote" in the bottom right corner of a post that includes LaTex you can view exactly what code was used.

Thanks again for taking a look at this for me.

I have another similar example:

When I plug everything in I get:

Are these also the correct steps?

Hi All,
I believe this is correct but I've been known to trick myself into believing I came to a particular answer in the correct way.

Integration by substitution gives:

so....

Does this look solid?

That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks again!

bobbym, thank you for the tips. I realized after I posted that I'd ommitted the constant of integration and dx. I need to get used to writting everything out.

anonimnystefy, this isn't the first time I've been thrown by an answer in a different form. I guess my problem is in the algebra. What steps can be taken to show that:

?

Hi all,
I'm having some trouble with this type of integration problem.

I break it into two parts first:

I solve each and get:

I end up with:

I've been using an online "Integrator" to check my work, and it keeps telling me the answer should be:

I'm not sure if my answer is just plain wrong, or needs to be manipulated somehow, or if the "Integrator" is throwing me off.

If I understand the question right, the answer is 6 ways. If you label the homes as A,B,C and D you will have:

AB  BC
AC  BD
AD  CD

These are the 6 possible combinations.

Hi everyone,
I happened across this forum while looking for info on LATEX. I'm studying to be an actuary (career change) and I've found it necessary to be as clear and specific as possible when asking questions. Until about a year ago I've had almost no knowledge of mathematics. I've been diligently studying in my free time starting with basic arithmetic, then algebra, calculus and finally the probability and statistics that I'm going to need. Because I've gone through all of this in such a relatively short amount of time there are some gaps in my understanding of these subjects. I'm excited to find this general Math forum so that I can have some answers to some general math questions!
On a personal level I graduated from college in 2007 (business major). I work for an insurance company and I live near the beach in San Diego, CA. I'd imagine I'll be a heavy presence on here for some time through my exam process big_smile

roflol  integration by parts of course.

Thanks! I need to review factoring apparently.

This site is great, I'll be posting here a lot in the coming months!

I'm not certain what you mean by IBP, so I'll show you my steps:

I'm able to get to

From there:

Ok, so looks like on a second try I was able to match your result. I'm still not sure how it wound up as :

Some sort of factoring?

I'm having trouble getting this result when I try to integrate this expression so I have a couple of questions:

1). I'm trying to use integration by parts. Am I on the right track?
2). I've been able to get the result:

and I thought there might be a way to manipulate that into the above given answer, but I'm struggling. Where am I going wrong/what is the next step?

Thanks!
