LOL, I still haven't figured out the wax on wax off thing yet. LOL

I think I am now seeing it. I had my mind wrapped around the origianl matrix.

I am missing somthing, and it is probably right in front of me. I can't see the forest due to the trees.

Thank you for taking your time and thinking about the question/equation. I follow what you did with the reduced row echelon form. That makes sence. But I can not make a connection between the 3 x 7 matrix and a 2 x 3 matrix.
Can you tell me how you solved it???

I thought I would stop by and introduce myself. I received my GED when I was 16, back in 1982. I returned to school back in 1992 to get a certificate in HVAC. I then became disabled in 2005. An injury at work. I about went crazy from 2005 to 2007. I am not one to sit around the house all day doing nothing. Anyway; I had my last surgery 12-07 and decided that I can still work. Even thou I have limitations. So I started back to school again. The subject of studies in math that I am taking this semester is Linear algebra and I am taking Differential equations, as well as other courses. The problem is that there are not any tutors at the community college that know either of the two subjects. I am glad I found this forum and for the help that I have already received.

The following is an assumtion: If I only look at the first two rows and three columns. Then the answere is 0, because there is not a leading 1.

Is that how I am suppose to look at the problem??

Is a possible reduced echelon form for a 3 X 7 matrix. How many different such forms for a reduced row echelon matrix are possible if the the matrix is 2 X 3??

The above matrix is in reduced row echelon form.
Arbiitrary enteries are denoted by " * ".

I have no idea as to what is being asked or how to solve the problem.

Thank you for the responce. It has been over 25 years since I had to study algebra. Due to me becoming disabled, I decided I would go back to school to learn another occupation. I have found that there are very few (1) tutors on campus that know how to do linear agebra. I am glad I found this site.

I will look at the links you provided shortly. I am sure I will have more questions. Once again, Thank You.

I am working on the following problem,

Let V1= (-1,2,2) V2 = (1,-1,0) and Y = ( 2,r,-8)

a) determine the value(s) of r for which y belongs to span {V1,V2}

b) give a geometric description of span {V1, V2)

I have calculated a= -4, b=-2 and r=-6, I am not sure what to do next??? I am just starting to learn this material.
