In 3 hrs the thief has run 120 km. Relative speed of thief and police is 10 kmph. So, police will take 12 hrs to catch the thief and thus the dog will run for the same amount of time (no matter in what direction!)!
Hence, the total distance travelled by the dog is 12*60=720 km!

ZHero&careless, there is a tiny mistake in the hourglass thing.
You don't have to flip it over when the 11 one ends, just start the egg.
Because 2 minutes of sand are in the bottom and 7 are in the top already.

Figured it out! You are right John E. Franklin! Thanks for the correction...

I differ in my calculations..
1.587-1.457=0.130
so we have 130 parts which are divided into 100 levels..
So 1part=10/13level
now required part =1.512-1.457=0.055
so, its the 56th part!
Required level=56*10/13=43.07... neutral

with a nine-, eleven- and fourteen-minute hourglass, can you time the boiling of an egg for 7 mins?

Yes! We don't even need the Fourteen-minute hourglass!
Start the nine- and eleven-minute hourglasses simultaneously. Invert the nine-minute hourglass as soon as its sand has displaced completely and then invert it again as soon as the sand in the eleven-minute hourglass has displaced and start boiling the egg! When the sand in the nine-minute hourglass gets exhausted, you'll have boiled the egg for seven minutes!!

Window XP uses some space for Hibernation too! You can disable it from Desktop>Properties>ScreenSaver>Power Options

Next, you should disable the System Restore as this too takes a few percentage of hard drive space! It can be accomplished from My Computer>Properties>Advanced and somewhere you'll see a dialogue 'Turn Off System Restore on All Drives'

Then you can clean 'All but the Most Recent Restore Points' from a button in 'Disk Cleanup'!

I remember doing all these (and saving a considerable amount of space) when used to use a 20 GB hard disk some yrs ago! tongue

Since no specific fuel was alluded to in the initial question, the correct assumption is that the train is electrical in nature and thus has no expendables aboard.

JaneFairfax actually had the most logical answer -- ALL trains carry champion swimmers!

There's no TRAIN in the question!?swear
Its a BUS! And i've never seen an ELECTRICAL BUS
