Hi all, I have another question from the book I'm going through that seems to have the wrong answer given? But maybe I'm wrong. I'd be thankful for a second opinion.
On question 2C I got 58/60 = 29/30 The book has 1/30
On question 3 I have 3/12, 4/16 The book has 3/12, 4/16 and 3/15
Thanks
Bob, The ansewer to the question is:
A = 8
B = C
I did out the nets for the 4 shapes for practice using Paint but my drawing skills needs some work![]()
still joined along 'matching' edges, but in an unusual position
Aaaah..........This was the phrase that jumped out at me. I would never have seen that "unusual" Net so its opened my eyes up to how I look at these problems now. And you're explanation was crystal clear. I've tried a few more and the light is beginning to dawn in that void between my ears;) Seriously though Bob thank you for this help, its appreciated .
Hi silverpuma;
Bob Bundy has left you a message in post #6.
Thanks Bobbym for spotting that for me. In the flurry of posts there I missed that one.
Right Bob, first thanks for the offer. What I'm looking for is clues or tips I can use on most nets. For example I saw on Cube nets as long as I had one face on each side of the 4 faces in a row that made up the cube spine it would work. I completed a few triangular prisms and they were fairly straightforward but for some reason I found the right angles triangular prism a bit confusing especially having to show two different nets for the one shape. Am I correct in thinking you can one have 2 Nets for any right angles triangular prism?
A few shapes but I don't want to be a nuisance Bob so feel free to say sorry can't help at this time...........
I can get the first Net ok its the second one I get a bit confused with.
Hi;
Sorry for the abbreviation, he is none other than MathsIsFun, the administrator.
Is there away to do that Bobbym?
I will direct him to this thread. He can answer your questions. Is that satisfactory?
Thanks..........
Hi silverpuma;
MIF does all that work by himself. He puts those pages together. Maybe he will someday have some free time to put more.
What or who does " MIF" stand for?
I understand completely and as I said above I am truly grateful for the help so far. As we both know the web is full of maths forum and website but for me I have found the clear and well illustrated modules here the best for my learning. I have looked for a donate page/paypal but can't see anything as I'd like to gift the owner of the site the price of Starbucks as a small token of appreciation. Is there away to do that Bobbym?
Thanks guys on to rotational symmetry now:D I found some of the "Nets" a bit difficult I had to give 2 Nets for a Right angled Triangular prism and my 1.5 brain cells started to smoke. Eventually I got the two correct but it took my far too long, practice, practice and some more practice...........![]()
One thing I did notice Bobbym was that there was not much on the site dealing with NETS for the more standard shapes. I have looked at the page on Platonic solids and that was helpful but a few of the not so unusual would be great. Mind though that's not in any way a criticism, I'm a very, very satisfied and thankful member.
Hi all, Another question from the GCSE book that I'm going through. I'm not sure the answer in the book is correct so I would be thankful if someone could look at it and confirm if I'm mistaken........again...LOL
It is question 3 a
I got B and F
The book says C and E
My understanding of congruent was that the size, angles and shape needed to be exactly the same?
Thanks
hi silverpuma
i really like trigonometry.it is very cool but i have little problems with remembering formulas such as this one:
sin(a+b)=sinacosb+sinbcosa
I think Sculley out of the X-files will be looking for the author of that strange language....LOL Seriously though I can't resist sneaking a looking at some trig lessons, but I have a long way to go! I have enough trouble remembering supplementary and complimentary angles without all the sin stuff![]()
Thanks for this I'll check it out.
I just spent an hour learning about angles and found it really fascinating ...............can't wait to begin Trigonometry.
As you can see I have a quoting illness.
LOL
I don't mean to bore you with non maths thoughts.........but.............
My wife and I attended a small Bible college over a decade ago and though small, the college had a group of very sharp lectures full of knowledge and they were nice guys as well. But on one occasion a local pastor came in to do 2 lectures in apologetics. He was asked by a student, what I thought in my naive pride and arrogance was a fairly easy question, but he said he was not sure of the right answer and he would need to check and come back the next week. I felt a bit embarrassed for him. Next week came and if I had been him I would have probably tried not to bring it up. Or when asked the previous week I'd have manged some sort of answer, since I was suppose to know everything about this subject. But thankfully he was a better man than I was and with his first words he thanked the student for asking the question and reminding him of how much he still needed to learn. There was an unusual lack of needing to be right and a peaceful presence with him. Because of his willingness to show his vulnerability and in this case lack of knowledge he became a giant in my eyes. In his seemingly weakness I saw an attractive strength.
Out of all the lectures he was the one I wanted to be like, he was the one who impressed me, he was the one who showed me a glimpse of true greatness...............................sorry Bobbym I've went on tooooooooooo long....
Thanks Bobbym for the very thoughtful words and advice. My enthusiasm is still brimming over and I enjoy (in a sense) the mistakes as they add another piece to my jigsaw of understanding. But after many years of life I have came to the point of not taking myself too seriously and have the freedom (and how good that feels) of not worrying about saying "I'm wrong" or second guessing what other people think of me as they survey my many inadequacies. But that said, its still a pleasure to interact on a forum with people who are helpul and courtous, hence why I feel at ease asking basic and sometimes silly questions:-)
A good friend told me years ago and I like it, take whats un-important and smile, take whats important seriously and still smile.....but......never take yourself seriously
Apart from me being dumb, this sort of amazes or better still, it mystifies me !!!
I went back and answered the questions again after a break of about 30 mins and and got them all correct. You and the book are 100% right of course Bobbym. I'm wrong 100%. I don't know for why but when I did the questions earlier, it seems as if every time I read or worked out what I needed to do, to go either anti-clockwise or clockwise, I ended up doing the opposite and I must have did this 3/4 times? After the 30 mins break I still can't workout how I made the mistake over and over.
I'm a mess as one of my Tennessee friends would playfully say. Thanks again
Just want to double check my answer as it does not match the answer given at the end of the book.
I have :
W
SW
SW
1/4 turn anti-clockwise
They have:
E
SW
NE
1/4 turn anti-clockwise
Thanks for the help...........
hi silverpuma
don't mention it.glad i could help.what level are you on?
This is from my guestbook post...............
I'm a mature student aged 52 left school with zero qualifications. But am now just beginning to teach myself GCSE Maths. This has grown out of helping my 10 yr son with his maths as he prepares for the equivalent of the old 11+/transfer exam (I'm from N Ireland). I'm amazed how much I love exploring this new world of numbers. For my leisure and bedtime reading its now prime Factors or negative numbers instead of, well anything rather than maths....!! I "think" I may have reasonably good but basic numeracy skills (began and ran 3 successful business etc).
I'm beginning at 10-11 year old level to make sure I have the foundation correct and then move swiftly to GCSE maths level. I'll be learning at home so I need to teach myself through helps and books and website etc. So I have a number of websites saved of the video and text varieties and this is the one I come back to all the time. Your clear explanations are wonderful. So from a grateful old codger like me please accept my appreciation :-)
hi silverpuma
labeling lines and angles usually doesn't require anything strict.It only matters in similarity,homothety,isometric transgormations and such,because you have to know which point is a picture of which,and also if Δ ABC~ Δ CDE then it is usually understood that Δ ABC is not similar to Δ CED or DCE or DEC or ECD or EDC.
Also for labeling geometric shapes every two adjacent letters are the name of an edge of that shape.So if you have a rectangle ABCD it's the same as having ADCB or BCDA or BADC and so on...
hope this helps.
Thanks for that, as I a bit worried I could be marked as wrong just because my labeling was not the "standard" way, even for something as simple as the 4 corners on a square. Did I need to begin with my A at the bottom right and go clockwise or the top left and go anti closkwise etc etc. Thanks for your patience with me anonimnystefy![]()
A bit of a strange question here, but that's nothing unusual for me
:
I have attached a screenshot of a book I'm going through and I was wondering if there is a standard way to specific your answers when dealing with angles and shapes. The image "should" explain what I mean and thanks for taking the time to look.............
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh ......it worked yipeeeeeeeeeeeee I'll add my question and image to the proper section.
just a normal jpg
bobbym, I reduced it down to 66.3 KB (67,940 bytes)
225 KB (231,254 bytes)
Hi all, I have a question that needs an screenshot image to explain but how do I attach the image directly in my post? I have changed the Image upload area drop-down box to 1 and browsed for the image on my desktop and clicked OK. But when I look at the preview its not there. Its my 1.5 brain cell, I know, I know I know.............
Please help
You are not alone in this and it will plague you the rest of your life. I once knew a person whom never made any mistakes. She was quite proud of her record. Arrogant actually. Do you know what her secret was? She never did anything!
Yes..........very true and well said.........
Hi;
No. you are not missing anything. Do not be bullied by everything books say. In mathematics you can prove when you are right.
Sure looks like a cube, does it not?
Thanks Bobbym, We all make mistakes...........I'm an expert at them LOL...........but I think that when you buy a book with the answers these should be really very carefully proof read and double checked as it can be a bit confusing when a mistake slips in. It now leaves me a little less confident as I come up against much more difficult questions and check the answers paper. Already 17 pages into the book I've seen 3 wrong answers. Ah well I'm still smiling and now to more prime factors over a cuppa tea;)
HI, just need a second "yes" to make me double sure....
The first simple question in a test exam paper as set out exactly as below.
1. Below is a list of numbers:
8 9 21 25 27 32 35
From the list write down those numbers which are:
a. even
b. multiples of 5
c. cube numbers
d. factors of 54
For c. cube numbers I answered 8 and 27
But the answer paper just had 27.....?
Am I missing something? Thanks for your patience:)
