The Nhoj Case Files # 15: The Case of the Golden Opportunity

"Okay, so maybe that wasn't really the diamond," said the man.

"Hey! Where did you hide my diamond!" the lady was fuming. it looks like she's about to explode!

"Just a second!" the man protested,"Before that, may I interest you with this?" He then snatched out of his briefcase what seemed to be a bracelet, an ugly one at that. it was covered with mold, and was rusting in some parts.

"Where did you get that?" the lady asked, her eyes opening wide. "Is that my-"

"Yep, the one and only! It is your heirloom, the pure gold bracelet!" the man answered.

"But my bracelet was lost in the lake!" the lady protested.

"But this is your bracelet! Look, it has your family logo on it!" the man said, wiping off some mold to reveal the logo. "I would love to return this to you...For a price that is"

The woman had a look of resignation"Oh well, how much do you~"

"Not so fast," I butted in, finally having enough of the conversation. "This man is a con! That's it, you're coming with me!"

You have to figure out why this man is a con, 's all.

"But what about my diamond?" was all the lady said.

so, that leaves us with 204, 274, and 294, right?

Guess#1: 246 (1b,1c)
Guess#2: 268 (1b)
Guess#3: 135 (nil)

So, I guess I'll use this guess.
Guess#4: 279 big_smile

Hope i did right.

I got stuck in the level with the x and the red circle within a green square.

I tried dragging the square to the x and then clicking it...

However, writing this post, I think I got an idea...
So, anyone saw they're forums there? The creator of the game, Clarence, has lost her faith in humanity! big_smile

Ooooo, sorry. I went ahead and posted a topic about this and didn't realize it was already here (although, why wouldn't it be...). I'll just paste my squabble in here and you can all ignore my separately posted topic.

I would like to comment on this one. I read in a similar topic before that you can't have a 1 in the end of the difference, because there is no end.

Stumpe wrote:

No matter how far I go, nothing I do can change the initial 5. Ever.
Saying that you're adding an infinite number of 9's to the end of "0.9" can never change the initial 9 laid down there. You will always end up with a "0.9" with a long string of numbers after it. Even infinity can't change that.

What I've heard is that there is no definable difference between "0.999..." and 1, therefore they are equal. I must agree that there can be no difference because no matter how many times you subtract "0.999..." from 1 you will always get "undefined". This does not mean their difference is "0", it only means we cannot calculate with "0.999..." because it is not a number and can never be a number. Infinity can't exist no matter how many ways we want to try and comprehend it. So introducing it into a number is about as useful as saying, "Chair = 8".
However, if you'd like to think of it as a real number, the arguments above apply and therefore there is a difference! eek

In conclusion, we cannot make assumptions about a number just because we cannot comprehend it *yet... The world is still not flat.

Like you said, we cannot make assumptions. There are a lot of undefined in Mathematics, and we just have to accept that:)

You sure will. This forum will help you answer any math query (and some non-math), thanks to its always-helpful members.

Good luck, and welcome!to the Forum!

@Blank_Brunette, there are some things that make math interesting.

So it's umm

Novice -> Member -> Full member -> Power Member -> Super Member?

Then the Real members

And the Moderators and Admininistrator

How do you become a Mod?

I remember when three back to back typhoons wreaked havoc in the Philip'ns. We lost power for 2 weeks! Good thing there was Scrabble, or we've been bored to death!

Then, a year later, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. Back to back typhoons, no power for a few weeks! YEY SCRABBLE!

Hello, Seirye! I really do hope this site is helpful! (though I can't help much because I'm still in Elementary Algebra) The other members, however, are very capable in helping you or your boyfriend with any Math/s questions you may have.

I hope you have fun in this site!

Hello, Glenn! Don't worry, the other members are terrific in helping out. I hope you'll have fun here!

Apart from pm'ing and being not based on post count, what other things would set apart a Real Member?

#167 Re: This is Cool » squares just above one » 2008-04-02 20:29:56

Let me get it straight

(a-1)(a+1)+1 = a^2+a-a-1+1 = a^2

Did you know that (a-b)(a+b) is a special product? It always is (a^2)-(b^2)

So, the one above can be simplified into

(a-1)(a+1)+1 = (a^2)-1+1 = a^2

Pretty neat, isn't it? Independently discovering a key to Special Products!

#174 Re: Jokes » British joke » 2008-03-30 19:29:51

Yep, that's what I assume it to mean. This just goes to show that even military jokes can show the difference of human races!

P.S. Racial groups are very misleading. Studies show that DNA differences can be more significant between members of the same group than members of different groups!

#175 Re: Jokes » Macbeth » 2008-03-30 19:16:16

Well, without actually reading Macbeth fully, I technically cannot get your joke. (Sorry, our lot did not get it, though! big_smile)

But assuming that Macbeth has said in the play that Thanes (of Cawdor and Glamis) is full of gas, or something similar, I guess I can guess that that joke was funny! big_smile

P.S. I never actually got why I don't like the phrase "you lot" a lot.
