Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Ooooh, so is ( a + b ) ( a + b ) - c² right?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

That is correct. Do you see why a^2 + b^2 - c^2 is not correct? And can you now complete the problem? Please post your work.

Yes, I see that. Complete? I though we were finished! hmm

What should I do next?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

( a + b ) ( a + b ) - c^2

You should do the indicated multiplication ( the ( a + b )'s need multiplying) .

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Okay... so how would I write that?

Like (a + b)^2?

I have to go lay down soon btw, my head is killing me)

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

You would have to expand that into

That is the answer. Go and lie down, get some rest, you did well.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Hey guys. ^^

And maybe bobbym, but now they want me to work with "Perfect Square Trinomials".

Which, for the most part, I felt like I understood. Like this:

(w + x)(w + x)

= w² + 2xw + x²

But, then I got to this: (4x³ + 7y³z^4)² and now I'm completely lost! hmm

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Alright...um... if I do it the same as the other one then I get

(4x² + 7yz^4)²

= 16x² + 56x²y³z^4 + 49y³z^4?

Nope! Try again please.

Oh wait, it is darn close!

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Mmkay... let me try and break this down...

And what the hell! I just realized I copied part of it down wrong! The exponent by 4x should be 3, not 2. Lets try this again...

(4x³  + 7y³z^4)²

(4x³ )² = 16x^6

2(4x³)(7y³z^4) = 56x³y³z^4

(7y³z^4)² = 49y^6 z^8

= 16x^6 + 56x³y³z^4 + 49y^6 z^8?

How does that look? Am I at least darn close?

Um... okay.

How does (2x - 1/2)^2 sound for the next one? It has a yucky fraction in it....
