Re: Mandy Jane's Corner

I think that is a good choice. Mathematics, unless you are Isaac Newton is very difficult. It is like having to sift through tons of rock and sand to get less than a handful of gold. Hard work!

Fortunately, if you work hard you can do anything.

If you can not come to perfection thanks to the talent . . . overcome by effort.

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.

Re: Mandy Jane's Corner

Hi bobbym and Mandy,

I was a bit slow with my reply Mandy, but I have sent two emails now about this and I think
you have made the right choice if I am right in thinking that you are not going to the college
course and instead making good use of your current materials.
(Let me know if I have got that wrong.)

At the end of the day everyone has to make their own choices, but advice does help people
and everyone will have their own opinion on these things.

The college to which you refer teaches A Levels and other things, but does do some GCSEs.
The level of Everyday Maths which you are finding difficult is actually below GCSE level.
So therefore it would be a struggle, but at the end of the day I don't know all the facts and
have little to go on. College course do have many advantages including good skills of teachers
that help motivate, teach, and train students, but the course level is the same level in theory
regardless of the learning college or open learning company you choose.

However this website has been very useful to me, and to many others, so do carry on this
thread Mandy and good luck with your learning.

Stephen

Re: Mandy Jane's Corner

hi Mandy,

I don't know if you can buy memory cards but I'm happy to make more like the flash cards if that would be helpful.  Advantages (i) it will only cost some printing ink and (ii) we can make them to suit exactly what you need.

As for your other question I'll email you about that.

Re: Mandy Jane's Corner

hi Mandy,

Here's some flashcards for temperature.  The first picture has two.  They tell you what to do to change Fahrenheit into Celcius and back.

The second picture has four questions.  If you cut these out and fold along the dotted line,  the question is on the front with the answer on the back.

I'll do some more later.

Re: Mandy Jane's Corner

hi Mandy

Q1 A company makes pork pies in two sizes. The smaller pork pies each weigh 820g. The larger pork pies weigh 17.5% more than the smaller ones.

17.5 % is a favourite amount for SATs and GCSE tests because you can do it without a calculator.

Here's an example

What is 17.5% of £92 ?

answer:

10% is £ 9.20  (just divide by 10)

5% is £4.60     (half the previous answer)

2.5% is £2.30  (half again)

add them up

17.5% is 9.20 + 4.60 + 2.30 = 16.10

So if you had to add 17.5% to £92, you would get

£92.00 + £16.10 = £108.10

Now try the actual question the same way.

Q3.  Josh raised £650 for charity. He divided the amount between two charities in the ratio 7:1. How much did each charity receive?

You have to divide so that one charity gets 7 shares and the other 1 share.

So start by dividing £650 by 8

Multiply that by 7 for the bigger share and the rest is the other share.

When you have posted correct answers to these I'll give hints for some more questions.

Re: Mandy Jane's Corner

Hi bob bundy mandy here. I have just tried the question and I found them hard but had a go at them.
(Q1) 17.5 % of 820g is

10 % is 82

5 % is 41

2.50 % is 20.5

17.5 % is 82.00 + 41.00 + 20.50 = 143.5 am I right then?

(Q3) dividing £650 by 8 = 81.25

81.25 x 7 = 568.75

650 - 568.75 = 81.25 is this correct or not?
Send me an massage on here now please?

Re: Mandy Jane's Corner

Well done.  All your calculations are correct.  So which answers from the multi-choice will you choose?

Q5.     These are some of the ingredients needed for making beetroot brownies. 250g beetroot 200g chocolate 3 eggs Gareth picks a beetroot weighing 410g. He wants to use all the beetroot to make a batch of brownies. How much chocolate and how many eggs will he need?

The ingredients must be scaled up by the same multiplier.

So apply that multiplier to the chocolate (200g) and the eggs (3).

Q6.  Pedro invested $800 at a rate of 5% per year compound interest. Calculate the total amount he has after 2 years.

First year. interest = 800 x 5/100

value of investment after first year = 800 + interest = new value

second year. interest = new value x 5/100

value of investment after second year = new value + interest

Re: Mandy Jane's Corner

hi Mandy

Those questions were all arithmetic.  There was no algebra, no geometry and no statistics.  So it's a guide but not a reliable indication of a grade.

There are lots of past exam papers you can try which will give you a much better guide of what you have to know and, after you have tried one, a guide as to grade.

If you want, I can point you towards some past papers so you can give it a try.  I'll mark each one you do and tell you what grade you would get if that was the real thing.
