Hi;

They say that the orbit predicted by Adams and Le Verrier diverged by such a large amount that it was extremely fortuitious that the sighting was where they predicted! A few yours later and it would not have been found.

There is another story that Galileo first observed it around 1613 - 1614 but due to bad weather failed to see that it was a planet.

Neptune of course. Galileo observed it first but because of bad conditions he did not notice the large motion indicative of a planet rather than a star.

That I can not say. He lived down the block from me in Little Italy but he was very old and did not like kids. When I would go talk to him he would hit me with a stick repeatedly. Later on we strung him up.
