I lived car free in Houston for 5 years, and I wrote a long-winded blogpost about it: https://isomorphism.xyz/blog/2024/car-free-houston/
It turns out that the US has a policy of designing their urban infrastructure to accomodate drivers in cars or other motor vehicles rather than pedestrians. This is so ingrained in their urban design that often it is very hard for people to live an enjoyable life without a car.
This might be a cultural difference, but I think that this is a morally reprehensible cultural choice and should be condemned.
