Re: short cuts

Tricks, maybe?

Or neat ways that mathematics can solve difficult problems?

Re: short cuts

Ok. Here's one.
Testing whether the product of two numbers is correct:-

Add the sum of the first number till you get a single digit. Add the numbers os the second number till you get a single digit.
Multiply the numbers, add all the digits.
If it agrees with the produce of the sum of the two numbers in the first step, the multiplication is probably right. If not, the product is definitely not correct.

Re: short cuts

And here's another: Actually a trick:-
Ask your friend to write a three digit number beside itself.
Ask him or her to divide the number by 7 and then by 11.
The answer would always be 13.

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.

Re: short cuts

Calculator trick:
Ask a friend to type 12345679 into a calculator. (Note the missing 8.
Tell them to multiply it by their favorite 1-digit number.
Tell them to multiply the result by 9.
They will get a whole row of their favorite numbers!

I'll be here at least once every decade.
