Disturbing...

Hi;

What a downer!

http://www.mathisfunforum.com/viewtopic … 70#p119070

Well at least it has a happy ending!

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.

They were stuck, you explained, they probably learned something.

What if they asked their dad and he gave the answer. Is that cheating?

"Cheating" is answering lots of question for them, without explanations.

Hi MathsIsFun;

I understand. Thanks.

Does the same still apply to a serious highschool assignment though?

On another site I go to, lots of people post up their take-home 'School-assessed coursework', which comprise 10-15% of their mark for their VCE subject. They get their help and say that since they're learning, it's morally ok... and disturbingly the site seems to be 'ok' with it.

I just think it's horribly unfair on everyone else.

Where do you draw the line!?

Re: Disturbing...

Yes, that in particular shouldn't be allowed. When I did coursework for school, we were told that it had to be completely our own work, and we had to sign something saying that what we handed in was completely ours. Thankfully, there's no way that the question bobby helped with was coursework.

It's fine to help with homework in general though, as long as the asker is trying to learn rather than just wanting to get the answers.

Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.

I think common sense would rule here.

When I taught at Uni students would ask for help on assignments, I would help them out *a little*, explaining as I went.

No problem, Bobby...you left an opening for the teacher to explain that the correct answer is missing an important little something. But I won't say what (you know it), nor post it in that thread, in case the homework assignment isn't due to be handed in yet.

EDIT: I don't know how important it is these days, but my maths teacher was always a stickler for its inclusion and would dock marks if it was omitted.

Re: Disturbing...

Hi All;

Sometimes when posting at another forum in particular, I can see that it is just a homework assignment. That maybe the poster has no real interest in anything but the answer. I answer them anyway because what about other people who are looking at the posts they might need it.

Hi phrontister;

In my case there was a difference between being enrolled at good schools and actually showing up. Please post what you have on the other thread. I would like to see it.
