Hi;
Maybe someone can explain why this forum has polite people and some others don't.
I am talking about 2 other forums one of which is extremely prestigious. You know the one where ever third post is a 211 variable inequality. Where they never heard of a question that didn't make the IMO. Here is a common scenario:
(After posting a 339 part question that he had to invent more letters to name the parts.)
Poster: Hurry up I need the answer in 15 minutes, so no delays, OK! Show all your work and make it neat, OK!
(After answering 337 of them and even getting almost half of them right.)
Poster: What about the last 2!!!!! I want the highest mark ever recorded in my school and your preventing me from getting there. How am I going to make the math olympiad team with only 337 out of 339? Huh! Hello, if I leave 2 unanswered it looks like I am a quitter, OK!
Me: I am not sure about those 2. Maybe you could try working on them yourself a little.
Poster: Oh, yea right. Jeez, Can somebody else here help me!

1) It's against the rules here.
b) I think the words 'Math' and 'fun' may have something to do with bringing peace to this place. A peaceful place where genius's and amateurs come together, learning, as one.
BTW, your scenario "Poster" is an idiot.

That sounds horrible, bobby.
But I do know of many places you need a thick skin to survive in. Hopefully not here!

I've also been a bit surprised by how some forums seem polite and others seem rude. Even with excellent site administration and moderation (which this site has too), other sites can still appear very rude to outsiders. I don't know what attracts certain types of people to certain sites, but it seems that Maths Is Fun Forum has been blessed.

GameFAQs.
That is all.

if you really want to experience rudeness and cheating
try some chess forums and chess sites. I also found
forums about computer programming languages to be
just double horrible.

That's an interesting comment, because in my opinion it is the outsiders that can best decide how friendly a forum is.
I often see places where the members are perfectly nice to each other, but they treat new people and guests very differently. Maybe because the new person needs to "earn the forum's respect" or maybe because the forum is "already full", but for whatever reason, many forums are aloof at best and aggressive at worst towards newcomers.
It's amazing how some of the forums that do this actually pride themselves on how friendly they are.
I'd like to think that we're friendly, so I'm hoping that we're not actually one of those.

Man, I love this place! I've put up with so many peoples insult about being stupid or ugly, to a point where I can appear unphazed by it! But you guys are AWSOME!!! Ur all so nice!

I love you already, S.G! And I've only read two of your posts! Hi, my name is Jess, btw. I love guitar people, anyway. My guitar-friends don't talk to me anymore, that made me sad. All this guitar talk is kinda ironic since I have 'Seven Nation Army' stuck in my head, I'll have to get it off iTunes. But, I haven't really seen you 'round here before so Welcome!

I once had to write a flash based web page for job at work, and there was all this AS in it.
Anyway this was AS2 and the site needed something I didn't know how to do, due to it not supported proper OOP so I posted the question on a forum and got huge amounts of stick.
A lot of it was personal too. In the end I snapped and told them to learn a proper language and never went back. Not my finest moment.
This forum is utterly different, I love coming here. Everybody is so kind, understanding and helpful.

Hi Dave,
So strange! Why do people do that .... ?
By the way I am getting into AS3 myself. I enjoy it. I use FlashDevelop.

I see the problem. Maybe we could import some vicious posters from some of these other places. Actually, they make my day. Sometimes you get, RTM, or do your own work, or hey, are you stupid, or man, your posts are garbage. I love when someone will follow you around from forum to forum to berate your posts. Cool!

Hi MathsIsFun
Yes, I believe AS3 is much better than AS2 with regards to OOP. I used to work as a COBOL programmer, though I was made redundant and decided to make a career direction and worked retrained as a Graphic Designer, which I was recently again made redundant from, which is why I find myself doing nothing but maths and learning C++ and MATLAB.
The way I see it, if I can eventually get a degree in Maths I have a great deal of options with regards to employment, and also something which is limitless with regards to learning.
I love it when someone will follow you around from forum to forum to berate your posts
That's hilarious, I've never heard of that.

Hi David!
... I was made redundant and ...
that i believe is because COBOL and AS2 have become outdated unlike C++ or Java or else likewise! we have no choice until we can predict their reliability and usability over time!
i guess the same goes with the Windows Platform related job experiences. Micro$oft still offers WinServer 2003 courses (at Lower prices) which, i believe will start getting replaced in Business Related Environments by its 2007/2008R counterparts soon!
i mean, u just can't help it but update!?
and the same goes with mathematics.. so many new theories have Evolved in Algebra (Abstract) that if i try reading through them then i just go to sleep (then imagine and solve the questions in dreams and i call it a Good Night)!
and bobbym . . . i guess it's "the sneaky, spineless cad! the reptile!!!" right??
If two or more thoughts intersect, there has to be a point!

Hi ZHero;
No nothing that exotic, I don't mind at all. It's flattering.

Is there anything else?

Hi Bobby
I don't believe there is. The satisfaction to be had when you work something out and the program it in and see it come to life is the sort of thing to make you run about the house shouting and cheering.
